{"id":66314,"date":"2019-12-30T11:59:09","date_gmt":"2019-12-30T00:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=66314"},"modified":"2019-12-30T11:59:09","modified_gmt":"2019-12-30T00:59:09","slug":"fix-em-and-open-em-up-august-2019-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/fix-em-and-open-em-up-august-2019-in-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Fix \u2018em and open \u2018em up &#8211; August 2019 in review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>There to repair &#8211; Thursday, 1 August edition<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BALLARAT\u2019S newest initiative to get people reduce their use and recycle what they can got underway.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the Tech School, the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/free-treatments-offered-at-repair-cafe\/\">Ballarat Repair Caf\u00e9<\/a> brought together people with the skills to fix all kinds of things and those who had items that would have otherwise gone to landfill.<\/p>\n<p>Loris Nankervis and her partner Tony Quinney took their 25-year-old Yamaha CD player in to be looked at.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe fear, because of its age, that if it needs a part replaced it may be obsolete,\u201d Ms Nankervis said.<\/p>\n<p>The CD player was checked over by self-professed jack of all trades Mark Cooper. He said the device was made by a reputable brand and just too good just to throw away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings like this were built to last 25 years ago, if I can\u2019t fix it there are a couple of other blokes here who are full on electronics fixers who might have an idea,\u201d Mr Cooper said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66317\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66317\" style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-66317 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/12\/BATIM_A_08082019_001-page-001-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66317\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thursday, 8 August front page.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>Hark! The heralds &#8211; Thursday, 8 August edition<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After the previous version of the City\u2019s carols by candlelight ended, a group of community volunteers stepped in to save the event.<\/p>\n<p>With support from across the city, organisers of <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/community-carols-to-continue-at-christmas\/\">the new Ballarat Carols by Candlelight<\/a> got to work creating an event that would bring the region together just six short months later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike most people in Ballarat when I saw the news, I had a pretty emotional response. I have two boys, we\u2019re a massive Christmas family, we love the season, and coming together to celebrate as a community at Christmas is something that everyone enjoys,\u201d said organising committee president Matt Hustwaite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarols by Candlelight is an innately Australian and Victorian tradition, it\u2019s been a cross-generational part of our lives and it\u2019s one of those experiences that\u2019s always there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo not have the local opportunity to come together with our neighbours and community, to enjoy the talents of our fellow community members, Christmas wouldn\u2019t feel quite the same. Photo: EDWINA WILLIAMS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>Play ball! &#8211; Thursday, 8 August edition<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After years of planning and construction work the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/ribbon-cut-on-new-sports-centre\/\">ribbon was officially cut<\/a> on the city\u2019s newest drawcard \u2013 the Ballarat Sports and Events Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Costing $24 million, the centre boasts a 3000-seat show court, multipurpose learning rooms, sports medicine spaces, a caf\u00e9 and 275 carparks and is billed as a state-of-the-art base for elite basketballers from the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a genuine need for this in Ballarat. This is for the Ballarat indoor sports community, not just basketball. It\u2019s been a long time coming, but it\u2019s certainly been a great journey,\u201d said Basketball Ballarat CEO Peter Eddy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I\u2019m most proud of is our commitment to make this a community centre. Not just a basketball stadium, a community centre for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The City of Ballarat contributed $5 million to the centre, the State government gave $9 million, and the Federal government $10 million. Could we actually have a home? They were wanting us, it was just so amazing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more they thought about it, they could see the beautiful symmetry between us bringing children on site and all of us working as a team here, BGT and all the other tenants, and making the place safer and more inviting for children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66320\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66320\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-66320\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2019\/12\/BALT-Aug-22nd_001-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66320\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thursday, 22 August front page.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>New trams tracks well &#8211; Thursday, 2 August edition<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s set to be at least one new old tram working the tracks around Lake Wendouree after the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/museum-takes-possession-of-old-new-trams\/\">Tramway Museum took possession of two W-Class<\/a> rattlers in late July.<\/p>\n<p>A W-5 from the 1930s, and W-7 built in the 1950s, were lifted off trucks and moved into the Museum\u2019s Bungaree workshop early on a Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The trams were donated by the State government as part of a program to give away some of the over 100 in storage at Newport.<\/p>\n<p>The W-7 will be restored and added to the Museum\u2019s rolling stock while there are a few different options for the W-5 model.<\/p>\n<p>I could be restored as well, kept in current condition and used as a film set or saved for spare parts to keep the rest of the Tramway Museum\u2019s W-class models on the tracks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been given two trams, one in operating condition, one in not so good condition, which we\u2019ll have to evaluate to see if we can get it working again\u201d said Peter Waugh, marketing manager at the Museum.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There to repair &#8211; Thursday, 1 August edition BALLARAT\u2019S newest initiative to get people reduce their use and recycle what they can got underway.
