I\u2019ve just boiled the kettle?\u201d Depending on the day, and how perverse I\u2019m feeling, sometimes I say \u201cHow silly! You&#8217;re supposed to boil the water, not the kettle!\u201d It\u2019s obvious what they mean: the water has just come to the boil!\u00a0 The two actions, and the results, are quite different. Let\u2019s boil the water, not the kettle!<\/p>\n<p>One hears it so often, \u201cCan I help you?\u201d Many will recall a teacher who, when asked by a student, \u201cCan I leave the room, Miss?\u201d, would reply, \u201cCertainly.\u201d She would wait until you were almost to the door and then add, flashing you a look of disdain, \u201cBut you may not. Sit down!\u201d We learned the rule quickly and dropped the solecism from the lexicon. The same rule applies to reception staff who, invariably, ask, ever so sweetly \u201cCan I help you?\u201d Again, depending on the mood, I ignore it, or say \u201cI\u2019m sure you can, but as for your willing, that\u2019s an entirely different matter.\u201d\u00a0 Is it so difficult? \u201cMay I help you?\u201d We were taught \u2018can\u2019 is the ability; \u2018may\u2019 is the willing. The difference is obvious.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s rather like the use of the word \u2018got\u2019. Again, we were taught, \u201cThere is no such word as \u2018got\u2019!\u201d I can say, honestly, I was well into my twenties before I considered using \u2018got\u2019. Still, to this day, it grates. It was always \u2018have\u2019, which I prefer. Times have changed. As for \u2018gotten\u2019! Mama mia!!<\/p>\n<p>Almost every medical receptionist says it: \u201cWould you like to take a seat?\u201d Sometimes I just give a look and sit. Other times I say \u201cThank you, that\u2019s most kind. I didn\u2019t realise you were giving them away. May I take two so that I have a pair?\u201d Occasionally, if I am feeling at odds with the world, it might be, \u201cDo I look like a removalist!\u201d or \u201cWhere would you like me to take it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every week, without fail, one hears a grammatical solecism on radio and television; they even appear in print: \u201cCarlton have won!\u201d I find myself shouting, \u201cNo, Carlton have not won. Carlton has won.\u201d The rule is simple: If the subject is singular, the verb is singular. Carlton is a singular entity therefore the verb is singular: in this case, \u2018has won\u2019 (the simple past tense of the verb, \u2018to win\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>Equally irritating is being told of a footballer\u2019s kicking prowess. As if, \u201che\u2019s gone and kicked a goal\u201d, is not galling enough, the felony is further compounded by: \u201cHe\u2019s kicked over 50 goals this season!\u201d No, he has not! He has kicked more than 50 goals. One goes over a bridge, and footballers kick more than 50 goals, or eat more than 100 meat pies. \u2018Over\u2019 and \u2018more\u2019 have quite different meanings. It is obvious.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t talk to someone. You talk with them. It is more civilised.<\/p>\n<p>Who writes the scripts for those telephone-hold message which go on, and on &#8211; and on? They should be drawn and quartered! In the course of the endless diatribe of information \u2212 and being a captive audience one is forced to listen \u2212 you are reminded to ask one of the \u2018friendly\u2019 receptionists, about \u2018whatever\u2019 when you come-off hold. Friendly? What else would they be? Sharp-tongued viragos! Vicious, rude, old cows who make your life more difficult?<\/p>\n<p>Why do we say that someone \u2018eats like a bird\u2019 when it is known that a bird eats its own weight in food, every day? That explains the obesity pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>If only we listened!<\/p>\n<p>PS: Do you know the word meaning a phobia of long words?
