{"id":66837,"date":"2020-02-06T05:56:01","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T18:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=66837"},"modified":"2020-02-03T01:16:47","modified_gmt":"2020-02-02T14:16:47","slug":"remembering-service-to-the-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/remembering-service-to-the-nation\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering service to the nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE twelfth anniversary of the dedication of Ballarat\u2019s National Servicemen\u2019s Memorial was marked last Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>At 2.30pm veteran national servicemen, their families and friends gathered at the monument where Sturt and Dawson streets meet to remember \u201cnashos\u201d who died and made sacrifices at war, including Ballarat\u2019s Graham Belleville and Victor Grice in 1966.<\/p>\n<p>A former Sergeant, Stan Kellett was the final president of the Ballarat and Districts Sub-branch of the National Servicemen\u2019s Association of Australia before it closed due to low membership.<\/p>\n<p>He said it\u2019s important to mark anniversaries and honour their colleagues as they did last weekend.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66839\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66839\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-66839\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/02\/DSC_0571-for-web-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66839\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stan Kellett laid one of two floral tributes by the monument.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAs long as we can stand upright, we\u2019ll be coming here. Even if there\u2019s only two of us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all veterans now, not just national servicemen. The bulk of us were all in the initial national service group that were 18 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy birthday\u2019s on the 31st of December. I was in Puckapunyal on the 3rd of January, 1955 at 18 years and three days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There were 287,000 young Australian men conscripted into the navy, army and air force between 1951 and 1972. In Borneo and Vietnam, 212 were killed while actively serving.<\/p>\n<p>The granite and marble memorial was officially unveiled in on Sunday, 3 February 2008 by the then minister assisting the Premier on veterans\u2019 affairs, Tony Robinson.<\/p>\n<p>Ballarat membership has now gone to the state branch of the National Servicemen\u2019s Association of Australia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE twelfth anniversary of the dedication of Ballarat\u2019s National Servicemen\u2019s Memorial was marked last Sunday.
