{"id":67095,"date":"2020-02-21T05:56:38","date_gmt":"2020-02-20T18:56:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=67095"},"modified":"2020-02-16T16:14:21","modified_gmt":"2020-02-16T05:14:21","slug":"gardens-and-service-club-mutually-supportive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/gardens-and-service-club-mutually-supportive\/","title":{"rendered":"Gardens and service club mutually supportive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NATURE and nurture go hand-in-hand for the Rotary Club of Ballarat West.<\/p>\n<p>The group is a long-term supporter of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, having donated $5000 to the Gatekeeper\u2019s Cottage and $2500 to the BotaniKIDS program for educational resources.<\/p>\n<p>Past president of the Rotary Club of Ballarat West, Lidia Aitken said the park recently took some time to give back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRotary Club members had a tour and talk given by Friend of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, Julie Bradby, the convenor of the Gatekeeper\u2019s Cottage,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the oldest buildings in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, first erected in the late 19th century.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67097\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67097\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-67097\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/02\/IMG_7013-for-web-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/02\/IMG_7013-for-web-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/02\/IMG_7013-for-web-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/02\/IMG_7013-for-web-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/02\/IMG_7013-for-web-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/02\/IMG_7013-for-web.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rotary Club of Ballarat West members Marylyn Jeffs and Libby Petersen enjoyed the ambience of the Gatekeeper\u2019s Cottage.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey were updated on its fascinating history and how the cottage is used for the BotaniKIDS Program, involving Ballarat primary schools&#8230;and giving children the opportunity to learn in and with the natural world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ninth biennial Rotary fundraising event, Garden DesignFest will showcase professionally designed outdoor spaces throughout the state in November, and current work-in-progress, the Ballarat Fernery, is to be supported by the festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeter Marquand, curator parks and nursery from the City of Ballarat, gave a very informative and interesting update to our members on the future of the fernery, supported by our mayor, Cr Ben Taylor,\u201d Ms Aitken said.<\/p>\n<p>The signature garden at Lal Lal Estate will be open during Garden DesignFest, with a further five acres of landscaping since it was last shown in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/gardendesignfest.com.au\"><strong>gardendesignfest.com.au<\/strong><\/a> for more information on the event which will support Youth Suicide Awareness this year.
