{"id":67135,"date":"2020-02-20T05:54:10","date_gmt":"2020-02-19T18:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=67135"},"modified":"2020-02-18T12:07:55","modified_gmt":"2020-02-18T01:07:55","slug":"fresh-voices-seek-raw-laugher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/fresh-voices-seek-raw-laugher\/","title":{"rendered":"Fresh voices seek RAW laugher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AS a child, Crystal-Rae Wright would dress up her brothers at home and perform plays to their parents.<\/p>\n<p>But that stage was very different to the one she\u2019s set to command on Friday, 28 February.<\/p>\n<p>A contestant in the Ballarat heat of Melbourne International Comedy Festival\u2019s national open mic competition, RAW Comedy, Ms Wright and a bill of 14 others, will deliver short stand-up sets to crowds at The George Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s been regularly dabbling in open mic comedy for the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the venues offer free drinks and it\u2019s a good opportunity for me to get away from the children,\u201d she joked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was looking for a night out of the house&#8230; But I do genuinely enjoy making people laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With Melbourne comic, Josh Earl from <em>Spicks and Specks<\/em>, and podcast <em>Don\u2019t You Know Who I am? <\/em>hosting the evening, Ms Wright is excited to meet and watch like-minded performers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be wet-your-pants nerve-wracking. I\u2019m looking forward to seeing other local comedians get up and have a go,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of us are friends and have done comedy together before, so I\u2019ll be happy for whoever gets through to the next round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great that the comedy scene is expanding in Ballarat so much that we can have a RAW heat now, and I can\u2019t wait to see the local talent that emerges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luke Tonkin, Kel O&#8217;Connor, Tait Middleton, Damian Anderson, Joe Eastcott, Leasa Kaitoa, Jackson Tait, Ronald Smith, Hannah De Buhr, Mike Stevens, Gayle Simpson, Scott Benson, Kirsty Jarvis and Haydan Barker are also on the bill.<\/p>\n<p>The heat begins at 8pm in The Lounge, the home of BallaratCatComedy, where competitors will be judged by young up-and-coming comic, Ethan Cavanagh, Power FM\u2019s Jules Zass and a MICF official.
