ONCE dogs and their owners return to the Wendouree Dog Park upon its reopening, they will be able to utilise a weather shelter.<\/p>\n
Funded with help from the City of Ballarat\u2019s Engaging Communities Program, the shelter will be worth $20,000 and is being built in response to feedback from Wendouree residents who felt the park could be more accommodating.<\/p>\n
Works including a concrete slab and more seating, alongside the shelter should take two weeks at the council facility on Dowling Street, which is adjacent to CE Brown Reserve.<\/p>\n
Terry Demeo, City of Ballarat\u2019s director of infrastructure and environment said once the green space is upgraded and reopened, it will be well-utilised and continue to respond to a community need.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Wendouree Dog Park has proven to be a great success, delivering a safe and secure area for dogs and their owners to congregate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese improvements will allow dog handlers to relax, seek shelter and spend valued time with their dogs.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven though the park is currently closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we all look forward to better times when the park will be open.”<\/p>\n
Cr Amy Johnson has been a \u201cpassionate advocate\u201d for the need for off-leash dog parks in Ballarat and recently said broader demand is high.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur residents are very keen to have an opportunity to exercise their dogs off the leash in a safe, fenced space,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil committed funding for two [extra] dog parks in the 2019-20 budget.\u201d<\/p>\n
More landscaping including paths will follow current works, and there are plans for further tree planting.<\/p>\n
The Wendouree Dog Park is closed to the public until further notice as the council follows Federal and State guidelines and laws in regard to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
