THE city is gaining another enclosed off-leash dog space worth seventy-five thousand dollars, with works underway at Ballarat East\u2019s Pennyweight Park.<\/p>\n
A shelter is currently being constructed where there will be seating, and other places to sit will be scattered around the green space. Fencing is to be completed in the next fortnight and tree planting will gradually generate more shade.<\/p>\n
City of Ballarat Cr Amy Johnson said there was a \u201cstrong desire\u201d in that neighbourhood for an off-leash dog park, identified after community consultation, in line with the 2018 Ballarat East Local Area Plan.<\/p>\n
She said the repurposed green space will be beneficial for the health of residents, not just their pets.<\/p>\n
\u201cOff-leash dog parks are a great way for community members to connect with one another, and for mental health,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you drive past any of the off-leash dog parks in Ballarat, in normal circumstances, you\u2019ll often see people standing around, chatting, making new friends and socialising.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey provide a safe, open space for dogs to exercise off-leash, without the risk of running away or onto the road, and we know dog owners really value that opportunity. They\u2019re important.\u201d<\/p>\n
