THE Federal government has granted one hundred and twelve thousand dollars to the Clunes and District Agricultural Society to refresh their showgrounds.<\/p>\n
Part of the Regional Agricultural Show Development Grants program, easily accessible toilets will be installed by the society, in place of 50-year-old facilities.<\/p>\n
The society\u2019s secretary, Gayle Wrigley said the corrugated iron building that exists is \u201cunfit for purpose\u201d and has been a priority on the committee\u2019s to do list.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not family or disability friendly, it\u2019s quite small and it\u2019s had its day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis support is so valuable to organisations like ours. Without this grant, we wouldn\u2019t have been able to do it at all. A small rural ag society just wouldn\u2019t have a hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
The upgraded amenities will not only be helpful to attendees of the next Clunes Show, but for the town\u2019s community groups, all year round.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur showgrounds are used regularly by the local campus of Wesley College, it\u2019s a staging point for the CFA, it gets used by Clunes Booktown… So it\u2019s not only about show day,\u201d Mrs Wrigley said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho could have known…all of us would be wondering, in this year, if we\u2019d be able to have a show because of the virus? But it doesn\u2019t matter; this will give a lasting benefit to the people of Clunes for a very long time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Minister for Agriculture, David Littleproud, said country shows \u201ckeep communities together,\u201d and are their \u201cheart and soul.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey bridge the divide between country and city, and provide a key injection into the local economy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese events showcase the hard work and innovation that goes into producing Australia\u2019s food and fibre.
