{"id":68907,"date":"2020-05-27T04:55:56","date_gmt":"2020-05-26T17:55:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=68907"},"modified":"2020-05-26T00:17:09","modified_gmt":"2020-05-25T13:17:09","slug":"the-local-band-with-a-global-significance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/the-local-band-with-a-global-significance\/","title":{"rendered":"The local band with a global significance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ONE hundred years of musical history will be celebrated by Ballarat Memorial Concert Band this weekend when the ensemble releases a commemorative eBook of its story so far.<\/p>\n<p>Launching via a Facebook broadcast on Sunday, 31 May at 4pm, <em>Ballarat Memorial Concert Band: a century of music <\/em>was commissioned by the Public Records Office of Victoria, and researched and authored by George Williams.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Williams said the publication moves chapter by chapter through the decades from 1920 to the present, expanding on the group\u2019s original role as a military band, to when it became a concert band in the 1980s, and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>It looks at the way music and military tunes changed, the world wars, social and societal shifts, and Ballarat\u2019s connection to those topics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thoroughly enjoyed interviewing past band members, talking to people who had been associated, and looking through all the minutes books and archive material,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68912\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68912\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-68912\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/05\/1923-Quickstep-\u2018B\u2019-Grade-Championships-South-Street-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68912\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1923 Quickstep B Grade Championships, Royal South Street. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was such a rich experience and a privilege to be able to delve into that history and bring it forward for people, because it\u2019s not just relevant to the band and musicians, but to anyone in Ballarat to discover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the beginning of each chapter, I\u2019ve done some context for what was happening in the world and Ballarat in that decade, so it\u2019s like reading the history of the last 100 years through the lens of the band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ballarat Memorial Concert Band was first put together in response to World War One, to remember people who served.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey formalised in 1920, and that was the same year that the Arch of Victory was finished. The band played at the laying of the foundation stone and at the opening of the Arch,\u201d Mrs Williams said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s not that many return soldiers\u2019 bands that kept going from the Great War, in the world, so Ballarat having one that\u2019s turning 100 is massively significant in world history, having looked at other return soldiers\u2019 bands, why they were set up, and their different forms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re lucky to have that connection&#8230;but sometimes we take those things for granted. This is a moment where we can really recognise the contributions people have made to Ballarat to make it a place where we memorialise, remember and honour people from the war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While exploring the eBook, Mrs Williams said readers may be interested to learn about music\u2019s connection to the front line of war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, I couldn\u2019t work out why you\u2019d have musicians at war, or what they would be doing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBattalion musicians were considered more valuable than regular soldiers. In a dual role, they were also the field ambulance, right in the line<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68913\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68913\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-68913\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/05\/1963-300x162.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68913\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The band in &#8217;63. They were getting blown up and gassed&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe band were majorly important for keeping people fighting. If battalions got too low to have the band, they would write to other battalions to spare some musicians, and they would send soldiers in return.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A former Ballarat Memorial Concert Band leader served in World War One and Two as a band master, and had been a prisoner of war in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis war history reads like a spy novel,\u201d Mrs Williams said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother thing people might not know is that when it was the Soldiers Memorial Band, the Ballarat Memorial Concert Band had the first female band member in the 70s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPam Clark was a teenager who walked into the band room and had to confront the male dominated culture, and then a couple of other girls joined. Now the band\u2019s very gender balanced but that took time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Presently, the band is in touch digitally and rehearsing remotely via Zoom as best they can. The eBook launch will operate in a similar capacity, during what would have been the busy annual Ballarat Heritage Weekend across the city, had COVID-19 not changed plans.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68910\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68910\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-68910\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/05\/South-Street-B-Grade-Champions-1972-300x154.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"154\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-68910\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Royal South Street B Grade Champions, 1972. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re excited to launch the book with a live Facebook event, interviewing people from the book, and myself, talking about it and how people can access it,\u201d Mrs Williams said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe book is free and will be hosted on their website from the launch onwards.
