{"id":69016,"date":"2020-06-04T04:56:41","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T17:56:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=69016"},"modified":"2020-06-04T09:16:43","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T22:16:43","slug":"digital-program-globalises-heritage-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/digital-program-globalises-heritage-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital program globalises Heritage Weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE city\u2019s regular Ballarat Heritage Weekend traffic didn\u2019t hit the streets due to COVID-19 restrictions last weekend, but the virtual <em>History at Home<\/em> YouTube series scratched a history itch for 2020.<\/p>\n<p>With stories of First Nations Peoples and the Wadawurrung country, the history of Craig\u2019s Royal Hotel, a musical background of the Bridge Mall Inn, Dark Histories tours and more, local storytellers and experience providers creatively showcased Ballarat\u2019s old-world charm.<\/p>\n<p>Brayden Dorney, secretary of the Ballarat Beard &amp; Moustache Union ran the Ballarat Beard &amp; Stache Competition digitally for the first time, judging entries alongside president, Jake Warren.<\/p>\n<p>When hosted face-to-face at Hop Temple, Mr Dorney said the competition and venue is always at capacity, but shifting to an online space meant a more diverse array of people had the opportunity to be involved, and the pair had extra time for deliberation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had over 120 competitors from all across the world, with a couple that had entered into world championships in the past, so it was great to see them getting involved in our little competition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Engagement and viewership have been very positive for the event\u2019s sixth, but very different year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had our four usual categories that we have each year; full beard natural \u2013 which is 10 centimetres to infinity, Verdi \u2013 10 centimetres and under, moustache, and partial beard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were judged on a scoring basis, then we opened up the Peoples\u2019 Choice Award, which is usually just done by the crowd, to an online vote. We ended up with over 1500 unique votes there,\u201d Mr Dorney said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw an influx in our \u2018just for fun\u2019 category, for females and children with fake beards, so we\u2019ll probably look at adding an official judging category for that next year. It was great to see everyone involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the competition\u2019s regular entrants, including some from interstate, were \u201cdisheartened\u201d to miss their traditional trip to the Ballarat Heritage Weekend, but glad to remain in touch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey couldn\u2019t come and have a beer this year, but feedback has been welcomed. We could still connect digitally, have a bit of fun and lead towards 2021,\u201d Mr Dorney said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_69018\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-69018\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-69018\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/06\/Tweed-Ride3-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-69018\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Liana Skewes said travelling the Tweed Ride route alone was quiet, but she had a \u201clovely\u201d time producing something for a new online audience.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe really want to put Ballarat on the map as \u2018facial hair capital of Australia.\u2019 In the long run, we\u2019d love to host the world championships down here. It would be a great steppingstone for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Producing two short films; a fashion presentation showcasing a few hospitality businesses, and a virtual tour of the annual Tweed Ride route, blogger Liana Skewes had a busy Heritage Weekend.<\/p>\n<p>By Monday morning, views kept climbing, and she was looking forward to catching up on some of the other online events she missed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a whole heap of videos I can still access now, and if anyone missed something throughout the weekend, they can come back to it. It almost becomes a Ballarat heritage week,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Riding around Lake Wendouree and down Sturt Street by herself, recording the 2020 Tweed Ride was certainly quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormally you\u2019re looking out for people, making sure no one gets hurt and everyone is ok. You get reports from people at the back of the ride,\u201d Ms Skewes said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis time it was just me doing something simple, small and lovely for people, which was also really nice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere the normal ride happens and you\u2019d post something about it afterwards, people are still watching and sharing the video at the moment, which is really interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, she expects some digital elements will carry over, alongside events on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this will change the way they do Heritage Weekend.
