WHEN Southern Design RV Ballarat launched eighteen months ago, they couldn\u2019t have predicted the position they\u2019d be in mid-2020.<\/p>\n

COVID-19 may have arrived for the long haul, but regardless, the caravan business offering Design RVs, Network RVs, used vans, service and insurance work, has been \u201cout of control,\u201d according to sales manager, Steve Strick.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe delivered 32 vans in May, and for June, we\u2019ve already got 18 vans on the board,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring all this, we\u2019ve put on two people, and we\u2019re trying to get someone else to come on. It\u2019s rewarding knowing that we\u2019re all financially stable and we can offer people jobs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just short-term work, either. It\u2019s going to become an even bigger industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

With communities shut inside, self-isolating over the last few months, Mr Strick attributed this boom to young families\u2019 readiness to get out and about, not just grey nomads.<\/p>\n

\u201cAustralia\u2019s full of beautiful spots. My wife and I have a caravan now, it goes everywhere with us and there are spots we wouldn\u2019t have even thought to go and have a look at otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Mr Strick, family vans, whether off-road or touring, are not only a way to see the country, but an asset.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can go overseas and spend $30,000 on a holiday, create some great memories and see a part of the world, but that\u2019s all you\u2019ve got at the end of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cA caravan is a good investment and something you can enjoy. In five years\u2019 time, if you decide you don\u2019t want to do this anymore, you\u2019re still going to get a good portion of your money back,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Southern Design RV Ballarat\u2019s products are not only a way to see Victoria and the broader country, they\u2019re made not far from home, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe manufacturing plant in Campbellfield in Melbourne never closed their doors once through the whole COVID period, and they kept all their staff on. They\u2019re full, Australian-built caravans,\u201d Mr Strick said.<\/p>\n
