{"id":69658,"date":"2020-07-04T04:59:22","date_gmt":"2020-07-03T18:59:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=69658"},"modified":"2020-07-01T12:11:01","modified_gmt":"2020-07-01T02:11:01","slug":"creativity-from-challenge-eat-drink-west","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/creativity-from-challenge-eat-drink-west\/","title":{"rendered":"Creativity from challenge &#8211; Eat Drink West"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>If there\u2019s one positive that has come out of the coronavirus crisis for John Harris, it has been the evidence of community and support at the local level.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-69660\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/07\/Eat-Drink-West-for-2-July-01-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>\u201cEVERYONE has been so generous,\u201d said co-owner of Mitchell Harris Wines, John Harris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are incredibly grateful for the support we have received, not just from our customers, but from our hospitality industry, colleagues and other business owners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis pandemic in many ways has helped strengthen our community and made many of us a lot more aware of others who may be experiencing hardship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Mitchell Harris Wines bar and event space opened its doors in 2013 and has since become one of Ballarat\u2019s most prized places to eat and drink.<\/p>\n<p>Offering the best range of regional wines, craft beers and artisanal spirits matched with an equally stunning and diverse menu, Mr Harris said the Mitchell Harris brand was all about building community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWherever possible, we try to support the great producers, farmers and people in Ballarat and western Victoria,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the beginning, Mitchell Harris has been a hub for local winemakers, and a place where guests can learn more about their wines and be motivated to explore the nearby regions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the last several years have been relatively smooth sailing, Mr Harris said the COVID pandemic was certainly the most testing time for the business.<\/p>\n<p>During the first few weeks of the pandemic, his team was constantly on the phone with colleagues and friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing forced to close your doors with about 12 hours\u2019 notice and a mountain of bills to pay was pretty stressful for us all,\u201d Mr Harris said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-69661\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/07\/Eat-Drink-West-for-2-July-02-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" \/>\u201cWe were very concerned, not just about our business, but the welfare of our staff and of course all our guests, friends, and family too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ballarat hospitality scene has come a long way in recent years, and we want to make sure all these small businesses survive so Ballarat continues to be a vibrant food and wine lover\u2019s destination when restrictions ease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Putting a smile on people\u2019s faces was what made Mr Harris love his job. So when the business had to close three months ago, his team quickly changed model in order to stay afloat and continue spreading joy across the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur management and kitchen teams very quickly devised a take away food menu, and by the end of the week we were the Mitchell Harris Convenience Store with a whole range of fresh produce, prepare at home meals, as well as hot take away food and a delivery service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe creativity, strength and resilience of our staff has been inspiring, and we couldn\u2019t have survived without them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With western Victoria fast emerging as a genuine food and wine lover\u2019s destination, Mr Harris said it was important to remain optimistic during this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven under these operating restrictions, we still offer our guests the same fabulous experience.
