THIS year\u2019s Daffodil Day organisers are encouraging everyone to get involved and raise money for cancer research.<\/p>\n
The appeal is set to take place next month with Daffodil Day itself on 28 August.<\/p>\n
The Cancer Council of Victoria is aiming to raise more than $300,000 predominantly through online donations.<\/p>\n
Ballarat Austin Radiation Oncology Centre nurse Keryn Williamson said even the smallest donations help makes this vital research possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve worked in oncology for 18 years and I\u2019ve seen so many changes in the field over this time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTreatment used to be just chemo and radiation and now it includes things like targeted therapy and immuno therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s so important to donate and raise awareness. This sort of research just wouldn\u2019t go ahead without the funding.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cancer Council spokeswoman Lisa Kastaniotis said that while our lives have been put on hold due to COVID-19, cancer does not rest.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe also know that less funding will be available for research due to the current climate, so it\u2019s more important than ever to ensure we support the work of our researchers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe rely on the generosity of community donations to help us fund this work.<\/p>\n
\u201cMoney raised this year will provide more than hope to people affected by cancer; it will fund vital cancer research that is saving lives every day.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since 2003, Cancer Council of Victoria has funnelled $69 million into a variety of research projects which have seen advancements in cancer prevention, screening and treatment.<\/p>\n
