{"id":70555,"date":"2020-08-24T04:56:53","date_gmt":"2020-08-23T18:56:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=70555"},"modified":"2020-08-22T10:42:27","modified_gmt":"2020-08-22T00:42:27","slug":"clarkesdales-bird-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/clarkesdales-bird-sanctuary\/","title":{"rendered":"Water security to improve for Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THROUGH the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/golden-plains-shire-grants-program-deadline-extended\/\">Golden Plains Shire Community Strengthening Grants program<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdlife.org.au\/visit-us\/reserves\/clarkesdale\">Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary<\/a> has received funds for a water security project.<\/p>\n<p>Within the program\u2019s environment and sustainability category, $5630 has been allocated to Birdlife Australia to buy and install a water pump and 700 metres of water pipes, to replace 50-year-old, broken-down technology.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70578\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70578\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70578\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/08\/Female-crested-shrike-tit-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Female crested shrike-tit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sanctuary coordinator, Emily Noble said the works will reinstate and expand a water distribution network around seven of the Sanctuary\u2019s lakes, lagoons and wetlands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is to maximise water capture, storage and availability for the birds at the Sanctuary, including many species classified as threatened or declining, like scarlet robins, jacky winters, dusky wood-swallows, eastern spinebills, painted button-quails and diamond firetails,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough the birds may have different diets or nesting needs, or spend time in disparate parts of woodland habitat, for example, from leaf litter to canopies, the one need they all have in common is water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis effective water management will increase viability of woodland bird populations at the reserve, which has positive biodiversity outcomes, as well as educational outcomes for the many groups and individuals that come to the reserve to learn more about woodland birds and the management of their<\/p>\n<p>habitat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary spans 535 hectares in Linton, with varying natural vegetation types, parts of the Springdallah Creek and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railtrails.org.au\/trail?view=trail&amp;id=145\">Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail<\/a> running through it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70580\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70580\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70580\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/08\/Yellow-faced-Honeyeater-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yellow-faced honey eater.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the 1970s, it was established by a young, birdwatching Gordon Clarke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t seeing his favourite birds as often, or at all, and thought, \u2018I\u2019ve got to do something about this.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe started revegetating one paddock, planting nectar and seed-rich species there, providing a super habitat for woodland birds,\u201d Mrs Noble said.<\/p>\n<p>Having grown paddock-by-paddock over five decades, the Sanctuary includes a harvested pine plantation, now regenerating naturally with a boost from seed sewing and planting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re continuing with Gordon\u2019s work in the paddocks he\u2019d planted. A lot of those natives are getting to the end of their 50-year lives, so we\u2019re prioritising works to plant the right species back in there, to provide plenty of food and shelter for birds,\u201d Mrs Noble said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis vision was always to optimise habitat for woodland birds, and that\u2019s the overarching vision of Clarkesdale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One hundred and sixty birds have been recorded at the Sanctuary over the last 40 years, including yellow robins, crested shrike-tits, and golden and rufous whistlers.<\/p>\n<p>Because of these animals, and more, the space is a \u201cpleasure to be in.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70582\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70582\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70582\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/08\/Male-Spotted-Pardalote-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Male spotted pardalote.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a haven for birds and wildlife of all kinds, and a beautiful place to be. The remnant vegetation is in really good condition, highly diverse and full of life,\u201d Mrs Noble said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a privilege to be a part of work to look after these birds and give them the best habitat possible, because they\u2019ve lost 80 per cent of their habitat across Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese remnants that are still a decent size are so important now. Over a third of Australia\u2019s temporal or terrestrial woodland birds depend on this sort of habitat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary features trails and an education centre.
