Photo: RUS KIELERUP COLLECTION<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn total, from start to finish, there were 13 years of it, but Long Tan was one afternoon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/smh.com.au\/national\/act\/battle-of-coral-balmoral-remembered-50-years-on-20180418-p4zea7.html\">\u201cThe Battle of Coral-Balmoral<\/a> was a big event, and the first guy wounded in that was a Ballarat person.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year is the 50th year since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dva.gov.au\/newsroom\/latest-news-veterans\/50th-anniversary-operation-hammersley-0\">Operation Hammersley<\/a>, and during that time, we had 15 killed in action in about 30 days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hunt arrived in Vietnam in 1969, and celebrated his 21st birthday two weeks afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>He worked in the Australian Force Vietnam cash office, looking after pays at Detachment One, Nui Dat for five months, before moving to work at Saigon\u2019s head office for two months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur responsibility was to pay the troops, and pay civilian contractors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who was KIA, we had the responsibility within 48 hours to get their pay accounts and leave up to date, and provide a cheque to the family,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70605\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70605\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70605\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/08\/Nui-Dat-accom-scaled-e1597726184838-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/08\/Nui-Dat-accom-scaled-e1597726184838-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/08\/Nui-Dat-accom-scaled-e1597726184838-768x521.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/08\/Nui-Dat-accom-scaled-e1597726184838.jpg 902w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70605\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Digs: Accommodation in Nui Dat.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere was no internet, so it was all manually done and physically delivered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VVAA Ballarat Sub-Branch is the second oldest group of its kind in the state, about 40 years old. With 102 members, the youngest is 69 and the oldest is exactly twenty years their senior.<\/p>\n<p>Every Vietnam Veterans\u2019 Day, the group usually holds a service at Sturt Street\u2019s South East Asia Memorial. We have support from larger welfare organisations that we can plug into. We won\u2019t be short, but we\u2019d rather operate on our own,\u201d Mr Hunt said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople still ring and want to join the association.
