{"id":70726,"date":"2020-08-24T04:54:44","date_gmt":"2020-08-23T18:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=70726"},"modified":"2020-08-22T11:16:10","modified_gmt":"2020-08-22T01:16:10","slug":"better-access-for-at-bannockburn-bushland-reserve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/better-access-for-at-bannockburn-bushland-reserve\/","title":{"rendered":"Better access at Bannockburn Bushland Reserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THROUGH the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/sorry-but-not-sorry-golden-plains-shire-council-meeting-briefs\/\">Shire\u2019s Community Strengthening Grants<\/a>, Friends of Bannockburn Bush has received funds to grade three kilometres worth of their reserve\u2019s four-metre wide tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Within the program\u2019s environment and sustainability category, FOBB convenor Stuart McCallum said his team has been allocated $5000, to increase accessibility to the 405-hectare reserve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want the tracks to be more accessible to prams, pushers, wheelchairs or mobility scooters,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70728\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70728\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70728\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/08\/20200713_112028-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Reserve is made up in large part with plantation timber that is coppiced by volunteers. Photo: ALISTAIR FINLAY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment there\u2019s lots of potholes and some of the tracks aren\u2019t accessible, except by push bikes or cars, but we want to make the reserve more of a friendly place for people of all major transport, except motorbikes, quadbikes and four-wheel drives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to encourage environmentally sensitive clientele. The more people are using it for good healthy recreation, and the less people are using it for burning petrol, the healthier the place is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although potholes and puddles have made travelling throughout the reserve challenging at times, Mr McCallum is mindful of the valuable environmental role they can play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were concerned if we get rid of them, we\u2019d be removing some of the habitat for birds and invertebrates that feed on, or live in, the puddles,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of flattening the road, we want to scoop out wetland areas beside the roads where the puddles can drain to, which is a delicate operation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bannockburn Bush Reserve\u2019s terrain is varied, with red and yellow gum woodlands, casuarina forest, snowy mint bushes, rare indigenous grasses, orchids \u201cyou don\u2019t see anywhere else,\u201d and even plantation timber.<\/p>\n<p>Works on the paths are expected to begin in November. Golden Plains Shire is lending FOBB a grader.<\/p>\n<p>FOBB have a firewood program.
