{"id":70734,"date":"2020-08-31T04:55:40","date_gmt":"2020-08-30T18:55:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=70734"},"modified":"2020-08-23T18:07:33","modified_gmt":"2020-08-23T08:07:33","slug":"greens-and-herbs-flourishing-in-lucas-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/greens-and-herbs-flourishing-in-lucas-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"Greens and herbs flourishing in Lucas\u2019 Garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SINCE it <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/reconnecting-with-people-and-produce\/\">officially opened in March, the Lucas Community Garden<\/a> has seen less green-thumbs out and about than originally planned due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, committee member, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/oliveapplemoss\/?hl=en\">Katherine Scott<\/a> said things are still growing well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t done as much as we would have liked to, but The Garden has been plodding along, more or less by itself, with a couple of volunteers watering and occasionally planting a few bits and pieces,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe garden with gloves on, practice good hand hygiene and don\u2019t go when ill. We\u2019ve been relying heavily on rainfall to water it, which has been enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time of its launch, there were some summer veggies and fruit in the Garden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a difficult season for them in Ballarat, and tomatoes didn\u2019t ripen particularly well. We\u2019ve learned a lot about what we can put in, and spacing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not expert gardeners, but have a little bit of experience and are keen to encourage people to get out and have a try,\u201d Ms Scott said.<\/p>\n<p>Zucchinis, capsicums, lettuces, beetroots, and long-lasting herbs, including parsley, have been flourishing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re encouraging people to take from the garden when they\u2019re out on their walks, if they live nearby,\u201d Ms Scott said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople tell me they come along and pluck a handful of parsley when they\u2019re going past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lots of greens are developing, including purple kale. Residents have picked leaves to throw together mixed salads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve put out information on the Facebook page about nasturtiums and calendula, because a lot of people don\u2019t know you can put the edible leaves or flowers in salads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A weekly club was established when the space first launched, where volunteers could come along, do a few tasks that needed to be done in the garden and have a cuppa together, but this had to wind down due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Workshops were also planned which the committee hasn\u2019t yet delivered due to the virus, but the committee is active on the Garden\u2019s Facebook page, keeping locals engaged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t encouraged any gathering because the Garden is just outside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufs.com.au\/coronavirus\/covid-19-testing-clinic\/\">COVID testing centre<\/a>. Vulnerable people isolating, who are some of the people keen on helping in the garden, are understandably not keen on hanging out in that area,\u201d Ms Scott said.<\/p>\n<p>The committee is now looking towards spring and summer, could soon become incorporated, and is exploring the possibilities of moving the Garden away from the testing centre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully we can look at a more permanent location where we can expand, and it can flourish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in joining the committee, contact <a href=\"mailto:lucascommunitygarden@gmail.com\"><strong>lucascommunitygarden@gmail.com<\/strong><\/a> or visit <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/lucascommunitygarden\"><strong>facebook.com\/lucascommunitygarden<\/strong><\/a>.
