{"id":70920,"date":"2020-08-31T04:57:48","date_gmt":"2020-08-30T18:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=70920"},"modified":"2020-08-30T15:03:33","modified_gmt":"2020-08-30T05:03:33","slug":"tramway-restoration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/tramway-restoration\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding funds for \u2018unique\u2019 tram restoration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/museums-plans-see-trams-back-on-track\/\">Ballarat Tramway Museum<\/a> is seeking financial backing to pay for the restoration of a Melbourne <em>Transporting Art<\/em> tram in its collection.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.btm.org.au\/trams\/504.html\">W Class tram 504<\/a> was painted by the late Archibald Prize winning portrait artist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portrait.gov.au\/people\/clifton-pugh-1924\">Clifton Pugh<\/a> in 1978, featuring magpies and hawks; a nod to the old Collingwood and Hawthorn routes it travelled.<\/p>\n<p>Tram enthusiast, John Whiting is a member of the BTM board. He said 504 is faded and corroded, running for eight years before sitting in storage for over three decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been in touch with the <a href=\"https:\/\/arts.unimelb.edu.au\/grimwade-centre-for-cultural-materials-conservation\">Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation<\/a> at the University of Melbourne, who do assessments of historic pieces of art in need of restoration,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve come and had a thorough look at the tram, giving us a detailed assessment. We\u2019ve approached several artists, thus far, who have expressed interest in restoring the artwork, and they\u2019ve given quotes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70922\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70922\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70922\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/08\/DSC01370-fullsize-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clifton Pugh included hawks and magpies, inspired by the Melbourne suburbs 504 would roll through.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re at the point where we\u2019d love to restore and operate the niche piece of Melbourne\u2019s tramway history and identity, so we\u2019re now looking for philanthropic or private funding to restore the artwork, piece the tram back together ourselves, and make it a unique feature for the Museum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A popular creative, Pugh wasn\u2019t just a contributor to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawthorntramdepot.org.au\/papers\/transportingart.htm\"><em>Transporting Art<\/em><\/a> project, he got the wheels rolling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the mid-70s, there was a party he attended with his then wife, Judith Pugh, who\u2019s supporting our project,\u201d Mr Whiting said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe suggested to Irvin Rockman, the lord mayor of Melbourne, that something should be done to brighten up streets and that they could paint a handful of trams. Rockman took it to Rupert Hamer, the premier, and it went from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leonardjoel.com.au\/the-magical-studio-of-mirka-mora\/\">Mirka Mora<\/a> was commissioned to paint the first tram for the Melbourne &amp; Metropolitan Tramways Board, before Pugh completed the second, with help from apprentices, Zsuzsi Korchma, Wayne Sibbing, Craig Roach and T Glew.<\/p>\n<p>Their names are signed over an illustration of a rock on one of the tram\u2019s side corners. Sixteen <em>Transporting Art<\/em> works were on the move by 1982.<\/p>\n<p>Pugh\u2019s purple and grey tram, with black, white and brown details, was withdrawn from service after a 1986 collision with a car, and put into storage at Preston Workshops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA part of it had to be pulled apart and replaced with parts from another tram, so at the moment, there\u2019s a funny bit at one end of the tram that has been pieced together with bits and pieces of another,\u201d Mr Whiting said.<\/p>\n<p>As a \u201cfavour to the state government,\u201d BTM offered to store the tram. Seeing its value and potential, it has since become an official asset of the Museum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one has restored a Melbourne art tram yet; this will be a first. We love the fact that we have the second ever art tram and the one that instigated this whole movement,\u201d Mr Whiting said.<\/p>\n<p>New art trams rolled onto Melbourne tracks seven years ago.
