{"id":71228,"date":"2020-09-10T11:41:07","date_gmt":"2020-09-10T01:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=71228"},"modified":"2020-09-10T11:41:07","modified_gmt":"2020-09-10T01:41:07","slug":"time-to-ask-key-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/time-to-ask-key-question\/","title":{"rendered":"Time to ask key question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TODAY, Thursday, 10 September, is R U OK?Day 2020, with all Australians encouraged to ask the potentially life-changing question.<\/p>\n<p>R U OK? is a charity that aims to empower people to meaningfully connect with others who may be struggling.<\/p>\n<p>The theme for this year\u2019s Day is \u201cthere\u2019s more to say after R U OK?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The organisation\u2019s chief executive officer Katherine Newton said the theme was chosen because many Australians were doubtful how to continue the conversation if someone told them they were struggling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur latest evaluation measures show that most people feel confident they know how to have a conversation with someone who might be struggling with life but 31 per cent of Australians lack confidence or are unsure how to have a conversation with someone who is not okay,\u201d Ms Newton said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to help them learn what to say after R U OK? because a conversation could change someone\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going and if you familiarise yourself with what to say after hearing, \u2018No, I\u2019m not okay\u2019, you can show genuine intent and genuinely help someone access appropriate support long before they\u2019re in crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Newton said the importance of asking the simple question was potentially profound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTime is one of the most valuable things we can share with the people that we care about,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you feel something\u2019s not quite the same with someone you know &#8211; perhaps you\u2019re aware of a significant life event they are experiencing right now or you notice a change in what they\u2019re saying or doing &#8211; take the time to genuinely ask them, \u2018Are you okay?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>R U OK? has a range of free resources tailored for workplaces, schools, and community groups as well as individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers have also added information on how the question can be raised virtually rather than in-person to help navigate the effects of COVID-19.
