{"id":71817,"date":"2020-10-09T04:56:46","date_gmt":"2020-10-08T18:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=71817"},"modified":"2020-10-09T10:47:33","modified_gmt":"2020-10-09T00:47:33","slug":"meredith-pantry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/meredith-pantry\/","title":{"rendered":"Pantry serving and uniting Meredith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>INSTALLED last summer, the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/public-pantry-primed-at-primary-school\/\">Meredith Primary School\u2019s community pantry<\/a> could not have arrived at a more convenient time.<\/p>\n<p>Principal, Steven Trotter said the town has always embraced the initiative, but demand has grown since the first COVID-19 lockdown when simple supplies, like kitchen staples, were difficult to find at the supermarket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did a promotion over our Facebook page which really took off, and then all of a sudden we stopped having to stock it. It was being turned over very quickly and being filled just as quickly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople were filling the pantry as they\u2019d go by, very respectful of the COVID-19 expectations and restrictions. Some were even putting toilet paper in there when it was difficult to get rolls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was nothing that we\u2019d ever asked for because the intention was for us to support and stock it, so the community didn\u2019t feel like they had to replace the items they needed to take. So it\u2019s been pretty remarkable.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-71820\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/DSC_0106-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Heading back to school this week, the grade 6 student leaders are again monitoring the pantry and rotating the non-perishable items as needed, so products from the back move closer to the front and are seen.<\/p>\n<p>Meredith Primary School is also part of the State Breakfast Club program, with donations from Foodbank.<\/p>\n<p>In recent months they\u2019ve been able to share this stock of food as only five per cent of students were on site, and Breakfast Club was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe made up a heap of hampers and gave them to families, but we also didn\u2019t want people to feel awkward about receiving donations, so we decided to do a pop-up shop over two Thursdays,\u201d Mr Trotter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe put out all of our Breakfast Club supplies on a table so people could take what they needed, or pick up food for an elderly neighbour down the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something we thought would go longer, but it got cleaned out quickly which is much better than stuff sitting on our shelves at school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trotter said action at the pantry and the pop-up shops shows the great need for community compassion when it comes to food accessibility in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur pantry is not something that is going to be empty every week, but there\u2019s going to be times like when we went into lockdown or when we put up the pop-up shop, that it will be a really valuable resource.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther times, it will just tick over, and that\u2019s fine. If it helps one family get through a weekend, or saves them a drive to the supermarket until they\u2019re organised at home, that\u2019s more valuable than it being completely cleaned out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The school and local charity, Hands of Change were given a private donation from the mayor, Cr Owen Sharkey.<\/p>\n<p>With the funds they plan to eventually relocate or redevelop the pantry so it is based at budding community hub, the Meredith Sharing Shed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought that would be a really good way to show what the donation has gone to; it\u2019s a visual thing, it\u2019s meaningful and it will support the community,\u201d Mr Trotter said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>INSTALLED last summer, the Meredith Primary School\u2019s community pantry could not have arrived at a more convenient time.
