{"id":71979,"date":"2020-10-20T04:55:59","date_gmt":"2020-10-19T18:55:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=71979"},"modified":"2020-10-11T12:30:40","modified_gmt":"2020-10-11T02:30:40","slug":"golden-pens-write-side-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/golden-pens-write-side-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Writers pen and publish golden tales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CREATIVE writing group, Golden Pens \u2013 Write Side Up have published their third book, <em>Pearls on the Plains<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Dedicated to late founder, Maree Cowan, the anthology includes poetry, short stories and ditties that showcase a large variety of genres, from light-hearted and humorous reads, to deeper work.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-71981\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/Pearls-on-the-Plains-Front-1-208x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Member Wendy Spall said the book follows 2015 release, <em>Snowflakes on the Plains<\/em> and 2016\u2019s <em>Gathering Gum Leaves<\/em>. Its seven authors hope their writing collection will reach hundreds of readers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about 260 pages all up, with the occasional black and white pictures, and there\u2019s a bio on the writers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hot off the press. We picked up our copies our last Saturday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Spall said the group began about seven years ago when a keen writer posted a notice to a supermarket\u2019s community board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe called out for anybody wanting to join a writing group and a few people started getting together. Then the library got involved and lent us a room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe normally come together once a fortnight to talk, laugh, write, and have a lot of fun. We pick subjects and have speed writing sessions for three or six minutes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very egalitarian group. We pick topics out of a bag or write on a word someone chooses. Then we read out what we\u2019ve done. We also have a homework subject that everybody agrees on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Golden Pens core group has been together for about five years, now with seven regulars and a couple of casual members.<\/p>\n<p>Writers in the group are currently 60 and over. Participants don\u2019t need to be confident wordsmiths, they may simply join because they\u2019re keen to improve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of our newest members didn\u2019t think he could write a word, but she\u2019s come each fortnight, she\u2019s persisted, and she\u2019s really blossomed. Her writing has become so much better just through practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re a very welcoming group. If somebody wants to come, we welcome them and we\u2019re encouraging,\u201d Mrs Spall said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI walked in there not knowing a soul, but they welcomed me with open arms and I\u2019ve never looked back. It\u2019s been very beneficial to my health.
