She gave me a squeeze of oil paint out of her tube and some board to keep me out of mischief,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought, \u2018blow me down.\u2019 My painting looked just like what I was looking at. I was able to see something and put it down straight away.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72349\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72349\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72349\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/DSC_0236-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72349\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inspired by the Smythes Creek landscape, Mason has printed a series of <em>Cypresses in Blue<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cTo realise I could do that&#8230;was a gift from god. It gave me confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later discovering the lino prints of Margaret Preston, Mason \u201cfell in love\u201d with her works, and consequently, the medium.<\/p>\n<p>Now a former art teacher of 40 years, Mason develops landscape lino prints five days a week, whether experimenting with collage, transferring a sketch onto a plate, carving, inking, or rolling her brand-new printing press, with help from her loving husband, Alan.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoying time in her purpose-built Smythes Creek studio \u2013 the first art space she\u2019s ever had to herself \u2013 she simply adores the tactile process and end result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the final product and making beautiful pictures. That\u2019s my aim. There\u2019s a lot of satisfaction in the planning, designing, and getting the confidence along to way to know my vision is as good as anybody\u2019s,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy prints are either plain black and white, or reduction. I only ever buy red, yellow, blue, black and white ink, and mix my own colours.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72350\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72350\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72350\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/DSC_0250-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72350\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The purpose-built printing room at Marie Mason\u2019s home is her first ever art studio.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI do anything I can to get the image onto the page, and I don\u2019t wait, I just start. I learnt from John Olsen that if you want to succeed at art, you have to do it every day, even if it\u2019s only for 10 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A daughter of farmers, Mason has always gathered inspiration from landscapes and the places she\u2019s lived.<\/p>\n<p>Ideas may come from the neighbours\u2019 sheep, her front dam, cypress trees on Bells Road, or a setting sun\u2019s last orange flare, but every work is further inspired by her \u201cfaith in god.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A member of Goldfields Printmakers, Mason will have two shows in 2021.
