{"id":72403,"date":"2020-10-29T04:57:46","date_gmt":"2020-10-28T18:57:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=72403"},"modified":"2020-10-29T07:28:27","modified_gmt":"2020-10-28T21:28:27","slug":"club-sms-cycling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/club-sms-cycling\/","title":{"rendered":"Cycling to Everest to fight children\u2019s cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HOW many laps of the city would you complete for a cause that matters to you?<\/p>\n<p>A team of riders representing Club SMS are clocking up kilometres to collectively cycle the distance from Ballarat to Mount Everest.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the Great Cycle Challenge 2020, the initiative is to raise funds for the Children\u2019s Medical Research Institute, and to fight kids\u2019 cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Pharmacist, cyclist and founder of not-for-profit group Support, Motivate &amp; Serve, Bobby Mehta said the team will travel about 9500 kilometres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re doing a lot of individual and group rides. Some have travelled the Skipton Rail Trail, and some have gone around the lake seven times,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have 30 people in our team and everyone is chipping in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ten of the Club SMS teammates are children, including one nine-year-old who is set to break his own 300-kilometre milestone this week.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mehta said all the young people have been doing an impressive and \u201cphenomenal\u201d job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important for them to be involved. The lessons kids take away at that young age is that they\u2019re doing something good, people are supporting them, and they\u2019re helping others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully they will hold these lessons throughout their youth and into adulthood,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The team encourages the community to offer support via <a href=\"http:\/\/greatcyclechallenge.com.au\/Teams\/ClubSMS\"><strong>greatcyclechallenge.com.au\/Teams\/ClubSMS<\/strong><\/a>, or for businesses to express interest in providing sponsorship in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they want to back us, we\u2019re looking to get jerseys printed that are loud, proud and visible around Ballarat,\u201d Mr Mehta said.<\/p>\n<p>Contact <strong>0423 492 140<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HOW many laps of the city would you complete for a cause that matters to you?
