{"id":72770,"date":"2020-11-23T04:56:51","date_gmt":"2020-11-22T17:56:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=72770"},"modified":"2020-11-15T10:40:48","modified_gmt":"2020-11-14T23:40:48","slug":"brown-hill-postcards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/brown-hill-postcards\/","title":{"rendered":"Postcard project brightens up Brown Hill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DESCRIBED by its creator as a \u201crainbow project,\u201d Brown Hill\u2019s meet-a-neighbour postcard initiative is spreading love and friendliness around the suburb and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>A project of graphic designer and illustrator Kelsie White, it launched just after she became a \u201cBrown Hillian\u201d in March, moving to Ballarat from Melbourne\u2019s West.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe lived in Footscray for three years, and there\u2019s a really big sense of community and heart that I loved there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first thing I wanted to do when we came here was connect to my community, get involved and volunteer, but that wasn\u2019t possible because of COVID. It was really tough,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t take my neighbours fresh, baked goods or flowers, but with my professional design and community development backgrounds, I decided to print little cards and drop them into my neighbours\u2019 letterboxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walking her dogs, Ms White got to know Brown Hill very well, and quite quickly, but had a desire to get to know its personalities even more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many beautiful homes and gardens that I wanted to compliment. I couldn\u2019t knock on doors, introduce myself and meet people that way face-to face, but I could drop them a little postcard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A member of the Brown Hill Progress Association and social media manager for the <em>Brown Hill Community Newsletter<\/em>, Ms White has been able to spread the word about her cards by writing a piece for the publication and including a card in newsletter delivery bundles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith restrictions lifting, we thought it would be a really good time to print more and get them out and about. Some people even sent them to friends in Melbourne\u2019s lockdown, so it hasn\u2019t just stayed within the postcode.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn case people wanted some extras to spread some more love around, we dropped stacks of cards to cafes, who were delighted to have them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people have sent me through some really beautiful photos of kids writing letters to their neighbours, running off and delivering them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether the postcards are delivered with a signature, or are anonymous, Ms White is glad Brown Hill has embraced the project to \u201cmake people smile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope it has inspired others to find a way to connect with their neighbours in a friendly way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms White is grateful locals have also engaged with her creative work, discovering her business through the letter-drop.<\/p>\n<p>Any Brown Hill local interested in writing a community-centric piece for the newsletter about a project they are working on is encouraged to engage with the editorial team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fun, easy and not a huge commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/BrownHillCommunityNewsletter\"><strong>facebook.com\/BrownHillCommunityNewsletter<\/strong> <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/kelsiewhitedesigns.com\"><strong>kelsiewhitedesigns.com<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DESCRIBED by its creator as a \u201crainbow project,\u201d Brown Hill\u2019s meet-a-neighbour postcard initiative is spreading love and friendliness around the suburb and beyond.
