{"id":73066,"date":"2020-12-19T04:55:46","date_gmt":"2020-12-18T17:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=73066"},"modified":"2020-12-13T20:59:26","modified_gmt":"2020-12-13T09:59:26","slug":"indigenous-wildlife-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/indigenous-wildlife-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous wildlife get glossy guide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FRIENDS of the Canadian Corridor and the Leigh Catchment Group have partnered to fund and produce an informative, educational pocket-sized guide of local native animals.<\/p>\n<p><em>Indigenous Wildlife of Southern Ballarat<\/em> is a catalogue of the area\u2019s birds, mammals, frogs and reptiles, including coloured photos so residents can identify or look out for specific species.<\/p>\n<p>Joel Ellis, the brochure\u2019s editor is an FOCC and Leigh Catchment Group member who has led the project, improving on the previous 2010 version.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 2020 edition is scientifically up-to-date, comprehensive and provides an increased amount of species and visual detail,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe selection and arrangement of the 115 native species featured has been reviewed by a senior ecology lecturer, and serves to help the layperson with species identification, while awakening them to the fascinating world of biodiversity on their proverbial doorstep.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe brochure captures the beauty of biodiversity. Each image was rigorously selected to highlight the diagnostic identifying features of each species, including some luxurious split images to differentiate between male and female, breeding and non-breeding, adult and juvenile, and&#8230; flight posture and use of nesting hollows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time around, there\u2019s greater emphasis on animals that might be less familiar, not as charismatic, \u201ctaxonomically diverse and data deficient,\u201d like some nocturnal species.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is to raise awareness of the more obscure locally-occurring fauna,\u201d Mr Ellis said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope it inspires a passion for wildlife while empowering active participation in citizen science initiatives to make one\u2019s backyard more wildlife-friendly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Images have been ethically procured and most have been donated by local photographers in the community.
