{"id":73352,"date":"2021-01-12T04:55:17","date_gmt":"2021-01-11T17:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=73352"},"modified":"2021-01-05T15:40:12","modified_gmt":"2021-01-05T04:40:12","slug":"gallery-book-film-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/gallery-book-film-club\/","title":{"rendered":"Ideas and friendship in Gallery Book Club"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MEETING bi-monthly, the Art Gallery of Ballarat Book &amp; Film Club is aiming to encourage informal arts-based conversation in a friendly and inclusive environment.<\/p>\n<p>Run by the Gallery\u2019s Association, it\u2019s an initiative of former English teachers Marg Jeffery and Amanda McGraw who have a passion for literature and the arts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great way for us to do something different for the members, bring them in for a social event, create a space that enables us to foster some dialogue around arts-related ideas, and connect texts with exhibitions happening at the Gallery,\u201d Ms McGraw said.<\/p>\n<p>People of all ages and genders are welcome at the \u201cdemocratic, comfortable\u201d meetings, where there\u2019s no vocal dominance, and every person has an opportunity to get involved and share their thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to encourage people who are really interested in art, but aren\u2019t necessarily artists or are practicing careers in art, to get some kind of insight into the art world,\u201d Ms Jeffery said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few people have been regulars, but sometimes people pop up, like school teachers, who we\u2019ve never met but are particularly interested in the artists we\u2019re discussing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olivia Laing\u2019s<em> The Lonely City: Adventures in the art of being alone<\/em> will be discussed during February\u2019s meeting; the first for 2021<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the books that we\u2019ve read and explored have perhaps focused more on a character and what\u2019s happened to them, but there is always some connection to art in some way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe upcoming book is based in New York, the character is in her mid-30s, and it touches on artists like Andy Warhol and Edward Hopper,\u201d Ms Jeffery said.<\/p>\n<p>The Club\u2019s last text looked at the life of Australian visual artist Brett Whiteley and participants were also able to view the film <em>Whiteley<\/em> if they weren\u2019t able to read the book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve moved away from the idea of being totally a book club to get a mixture of people involved, and engage with fiction and non-fiction,\u201d Ms Jeffery said.<\/p>\n<p>The Book &amp; Film Club runs from 5.30pm on Monday evenings, every couple of months and attendance can be \u201cfluid,\u201d not requiring any ongoing commitment.<\/p>\n<p>The Monday, 15 February meeting will be facilitated online. The Association is looking to run a mix of in-house and virtual events in the coming year, so those who can\u2019t get to the Gallery can still access events from home.<\/p>\n<p>Face-to-face meetings usually run for two hours, with wine and cheese available.
