New tastes and old world charm<\/strong><\/p>\n

A SPACE that takes inspiration from merchant spice traders, old-world ships and warehouses, Roy Hammond is the new kid on the Armstrong Street foodie block.<\/p>\n

With a focus on Australian and international gins that will \u201cspark conversation,\u201d owner Brian Taylor said Roy\u2019s is a place for families and friends to connect, enjoy each other\u2019s company, and tuck into modern Asian cuisine amongst cozy timber beams and floorboards.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur point of difference is our strong, extensive range of gin for people to learn about and experience, and whisky and wine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Whether you drink alcohol or not, there\u2019s a cocktail or mocktail to suit everyone.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re a one-stop-shop for drinks; all types of beer, cocktails, spirits, and non-alcoholic drinks. In winter, we\u2019ll focus on whiskeys.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity to taste things you may not have been able to taste before and talk about them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bringing life back to a building which many will remember as a bike shop, Roy\u2019s takes its name from another business that operated in the \u2018Hop Lane\u2019 precinct; Roy Hammond Signs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we redevelop a space, I get a feel for the building and its history so I\u2019m sympathetic of that heritage with my design, and that\u2019s how the Roy Hammond name came about,\u201d Mr Taylor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have such a beautiful Roy Hammond sign in the laneway window with special gold-leaf artwork on it.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are quite amazed by the building; a hidden gem they didn\u2019t realise was there because there hasn\u2019t been anything in there for over three years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having opened last month, Mr Taylor is excited about what\u2019s to come for the venue, and is ready to prepare the diary to host more drink-centric events.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to run some classes where people can gain a basic knowledge on different spirits and drinks, and we\u2019re already running a Gin and Tea session on Saturdays.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re going really well. Whatever gin we use in the class, we have an ambassador from that brand come up take people through it, mixing gin and tea,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot many people do this, so it\u2019s gaining traction with people out of Melbourne, and we really want to engage that Melbourne and European experience of indoor-outdoor hospitality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Open from afternoons into the evening on such a prominent corner, Mr Taylor hopes Roy\u2019s will be a relaxed social hub.<\/p>\n
