{"id":73939,"date":"2021-02-11T04:55:44","date_gmt":"2021-02-10T17:55:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=73939"},"modified":"2021-02-10T21:24:25","modified_gmt":"2021-02-10T10:24:25","slug":"legacy-ex-pow-memorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/legacy-ex-pow-memorial\/","title":{"rendered":"Student to present poem of remembrance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THIRTEEN-year-old Heidi Erwin will read a poem at this Sunday\u2019s virtual seventeenth anniversary service for The Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial.<\/p>\n<p>The young speaker was selected by the Ballarat Legacy group and has filmed a reading of John McCosker OAM\u2019s 2020 piece, <em>The Writing\u2019s on the Wall <\/em>about the 36,000 servicepeople recognised on the Memorial wall opposite Lake Wendouree.<\/p>\n<p>The Damascus College year 9 student said she was honoured to be offered the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Heidi previously laid wreaths on behalf of Legacy at the Garden of the Grieving mother, but this is the first time her public speaking skills are in the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was excited to be chosen because there are a lot of Legacy public speakers and they picked me. It\u2019s also important to be representing Legacy as my dad was in the army,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Heidi\u2019s father served in East Timor as a member of the 4th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment.<\/p>\n<p>The Erwin family has been supported by Legacy since, and Heidi has enjoyed making connections with other young people who understand what it\u2019s like to have a parent or relative who is an ex-serviceperson or is currently in the military.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do lots of activities every year with all different families from around Australia. We\u2019ve met lots of new people and made friends with other Ballarat families,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mum, Renee Erwin, said it\u2019s important for younger generations to connect with the experiences of ex-prisoners of war and past servicepeople.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we pass the stories down, we keep them alive.
