{"id":73942,"date":"2021-02-14T04:55:39","date_gmt":"2021-02-13T17:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=73942"},"modified":"2021-02-10T21:30:26","modified_gmt":"2021-02-10T10:30:26","slug":"jimmys-allsorts-fecri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/jimmys-allsorts-fecri\/","title":{"rendered":"From the river to the sea for FECRI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IN November of 2019, Jim Waight was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin\u2019s follicular lymphoma.<\/p>\n<p>Undergoing six rounds of chemotherapy, the keen cyclist always looked forward to his next escape; jumping on his road bike for a ride.<\/p>\n<p>Passionate about the ritual and camaraderie of cycling, and discovering new cancer treatments, Mr Waight his friends will ride 520 kilometres over two days from Swan Hill to Port Fairy.<\/p>\n<p>Participating in the Murray to Moyne fundraising event next month, the goal of the team, Jimmy\u2019s Allsorts, is to raise more than $30,000 for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the only regional cancer research institute in Australia, so our team coming from Ballarat are very proud to support FECRI, because it\u2019s a part of us, and it\u2019s who we are in our town,\u201d Mr Waight said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been a huge amount of support&#8230; and our team is very grateful for that because it\u2019s not about our team, it\u2019s about the work of the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute, which will only benefit future generations of people who are suffering from this disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recently, a teenager in Mr Waight\u2019s life had treatment for a brain tumour. Photo: EDWINA WILLIAMS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe thing that I can do is cycle to raise funds to bring about a cure, so that people don\u2019t suffer and die prematurely, leaving their family without a father, brother, aunty or 15-year-old son,\u201d Mr Waight said.<\/p>\n<p>Jimmy\u2019s Allsorts include John Carr, Jamey Coles, Isaac Manley, Jed Manley, Scott Petrie, Matthew Sheehan, Mark Verberne, Aaron Brennan, Travis Hoyle, Stuart Birkin, Damian Larkin, and Damian Waight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t be here today without the support of the men in my team. I\u2019d like to publicly thank them for being here with me. The \u2018who\u2019 in this team is important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the fundraising initiative launched at St Patrick\u2019s College on World Cancer day, 4 February.
