{"id":73971,"date":"2021-02-18T04:55:46","date_gmt":"2021-02-17T17:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=73971"},"modified":"2021-02-15T18:11:32","modified_gmt":"2021-02-15T07:11:32","slug":"vietnam-veterans-becs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/vietnam-veterans-becs\/","title":{"rendered":"Shed and Vets shoulder-to-shoulder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">THE Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Ballarat Sub-Branch has found a new home at the Ballarat East Community Men\u2019s Shed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The VVAA group has offered welfare, support and advocacy services, and a sense of community to Ballarat\u2019s Vietnam veterans for over 40 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They will temporarily use one of BECS\u2019 sheds as a social space, holding fortnightly barbecues, and hope the site will become their permanent base.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">VVAA Ballarat Sub-Branch secretary Gordon Hunt said the lunchtime sausage sizzles are held every second Wednesday from 12pm, welcoming Vietnam servicepeople, and younger \u201ccontemporary\u201d veterans from Somalia to Afghanistan into the fold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe want them to know that we\u2019re always here for them. We\u2019re a group they can rely on. Cumulatively, we have over 200 years of experience,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey can turn up to the barbecues, eat, have a soft drink, and chat to their peers. They don\u2019t have an association of their own because they\u2019re too few, and they\u2019re dispersed, so we can help out there, provide distractions, connections and community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere are no more Vietnam veterans being made, but if we can get more young people to join us, then they could end up continuing the Association.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The local VVAA committee have members in common with BECS. They have great plans to contribute to the facility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAll of our members are 70-plus. We\u2019re going to level-out and concrete the paths to make the site more accessible for people of all abilities,\u201d Mr Hunt said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019ll put up shade cloths, do some landscaping and put in fixed seating.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">VVAA Ballarat Sub-Branch ex-president Bill Dobell said the collaboration has a lot of potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to allow us to learn from the Men\u2019s Shed group. We have skills of value to them, and vice versa,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBecause we have a venue to hold these barbecues, it helps with veterans\u2019 mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere are a lot of mental health issues in the veteran community, including suicides, but we know events like ours help because they can talk to likeminded people and have fun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BECS\u2019 committee voted unanimously to share their space with VVAA Ballarat. Treasurer, Glenn Arkell agreed the veterans\u2019 \u201cexpertise and experiences can benefit\u201d their members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA new influx of people coming and going can also help them because it\u2019s someone else to connect with,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For committee member Lynton Roberts, the partnership is a \u201cwin-win,\u201d where the men can continue to \u201ctalk shoulder-to-shoulder\u201d with others like them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s a synergy between the VVAA and us here, working with men, the same age demographic, and some people who have experienced a loss in their life,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNormally when a community group comes in here, we have a hire fee or donation to help us keep our facility open, but we\u2019ve waived that with the VVAA guys because they\u2019ll contribute in other ways.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last week, Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle visited the VVAA Ballarat barbecue to announce an upcoming round of capital grants for veterans\u2019 groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Funding packages between $5000 and $50,000 will be available to successful associations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey\u2019re to improve facilities&#8230; and anything groups might need,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI know the concreting plans will benefit both the Vietnam Veterans and BECS groups, so I really encourage them to put an application in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe applications close on the 12<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of April&#8230; and I\u2019m happy to write a letter of support because I\u2019d love to see those works happen here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Ballarat Sub-Branch has found a new home at the Ballarat East Community Men\u2019s Shed.
