{"id":74147,"date":"2021-02-26T04:54:53","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T17:54:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=74147"},"modified":"2021-02-24T22:11:34","modified_gmt":"2021-02-24T11:11:34","slug":"upstart-challenge-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/upstart-challenge-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Upstart is back on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PREPARING the workforce\u2019s next generation for innovation and critical thinking, the Upstart Challenge is returning in 2021 to engage and strengthen Ballarat\u2019s school students.<\/p>\n<p>Encouraging entrepreneurial mindsets, the program asks participating young people to develop STEM-centric products that could solve and help with real-world problems.<\/p>\n<p>Renewable energy technology, an open-water rescue watch, an environmental app, and a community activity program are just some of the solutions pitched at the end of past Upstart Challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Co-founder and director Jenny Perks said resilience, initiative, proactivity are important skills for young people to have, especially in the current global climate and health crises.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe entrepreneurial journey they go through in the Upstart Challenge is all about taking feedback from others, and adapting what you\u2019re doing so you can be resilient for the future,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives young people employability skills for the future where they can consider starting their own business as a viable career option&#8230; and the skills are generic and because it\u2019s based around student interests and passions, giving them agency over where to take solutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they want to go into general employment or tertiary education&#8230;creative thinking, problem solving, communication and teamwork, are very solid skills workplaces are looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Upstart Challenge usually culminates in a pitch showcase, where students can share their solutions and network with businesspeople throughout Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>The program is developed with the Australian year 8 to 10 curriculum in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Register your school at <a href=\"http:\/\/upstarthq.com.au\"><strong>upstarthq.com.au<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PREPARING the workforce\u2019s next generation for innovation and critical thinking, the Upstart Challenge is returning in 2021 to engage and strengthen Ballarat\u2019s school students.
