{"id":74266,"date":"2021-03-04T04:45:03","date_gmt":"2021-03-03T17:45:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=74266"},"modified":"2021-03-04T08:49:21","modified_gmt":"2021-03-03T21:49:21","slug":"ballarat-city-quad-scull-nationals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/sport\/ballarat-city-quad-scull-nationals\/","title":{"rendered":"Quick quad aims for national title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BALLARAT City Rowing Club will be represented by a young men\u2019s coxless quadruple scull in the under twenty-one division of this month\u2019s Australian Rowing Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Heading to Tasmania\u2019s Lake Barrington for nationals within a few weeks, the crew of teenagers have state gold and bronze medals from the Rowing Victoria State Championship regatta in Nagambie last month.<\/p>\n<p>Placing third in an open-aged race, coach Grant McKechnie said his crew broke their personal best time by 12 seconds, up against Olympic pathway rowers.<\/p>\n<p>The Ballarat City boys are like \u201clightning,\u201d and could be even quicker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe boat we\u2019ve got is strong and robust, but it\u2019s an entry-level Swift. We\u2019ve got a Club A, which is five-plus kilos overweight,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver two kilometres, they\u2019re pushing a lot of extra weight they don\u2019t need, which works out between five and eight seconds difference in pace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you take the minimum weight off our boat, it puts us over the top of the Melbourne University crew that came second, and shoulder-to-shoulder with the Mercantile crew that won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ballarat City has located a second-hand Filippi racing shell in Melbourne. In immaculate condition, they can secure it for $22,000; about $16,000 cheaper than buying brand new.<\/p>\n<p>Currently fundraising to purchase it, the club predict the Filippi will not only \u201clevel the playing field\u201d for nationals, but be a worthwhile boost to the Ballarat rowing community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur guys have to be 30-plus metres faster to get their bow ball to their competitors\u2019 bow ball.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re okay with racing in our current boat, but if we can somehow scramble the money together to get the boat this week, then that\u2019s great,\u201d Mr McKechnie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just an investment in this crew, but Ballarat rowing long-term. These guys have made Ballarat City Rowing Club noticed again&#8230; and if we can create a program that\u2019s sustainable, keeps rowers in Ballarat, and rivals big Melbourne clubs, then Ballarat\u2019s another viable option for a look-in from Victorian and national sides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crew will compete in the Australian Rowing Championships under 21 coxless quadruple scull division &#8211; \u201ctheir focal race\u201d &#8211; with two of its rowers also having a crack at the under 19 double scull, and one jumping in the lightweight single scull field.<\/p>\n<p>The crew will also try their hand at the club championship coxless four, and the National Sprint open quadruple scull.<\/p>\n<p>Visit the team&#8217;s Australian Sports Foundation fundraising page at <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/384EkfT\">bit.ly\/384EkfT<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BALLARAT City Rowing Club will be represented by a young men\u2019s coxless quadruple scull in the under twenty-one division of this month\u2019s Australian Rowing Championships.
