{"id":75294,"date":"2021-05-03T04:54:49","date_gmt":"2021-05-02T18:54:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=75294"},"modified":"2021-04-28T21:17:21","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T11:17:21","slug":"grass-tree-nature-trail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/grass-tree-nature-trail\/","title":{"rendered":"Get your steps up in the grass trees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WOOWOOKARUNG Regional Park\u2019s Grass-tree Nature Trail has officially opened for the community to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>The 1.8-kilometre bush track amongst the native grass trees takes approximately 45 minutes and 2400 steps to walk, but is also accessible to bikes and horses.<\/p>\n<p>It runs between the Park lookout and Katy Ryans Road, and has been developed with a State government Pick My Project grant worth $78,000.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75318\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75318\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75318\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/04\/IMG_8542-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75318\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Starting at the lookout, hikers, runners, cyclists or horse riders can travel along the new trail for 1.8 kilometres.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bob Hartmann is president of the Friends of the Canadian Corridor who drew up the trail\u2019s first basic designs, originally explored its costings, and campaigned for funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis trail and its infrastructure is really important for our community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are 100,000 people in Ballarat, and by 2035 there\u2019ll be about 150,000. Woowookarung is going to be pivotal for health and wellbeing for this community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2013, we were worried the park was going to be sold off for housing estates, so it\u2019s fantastic to be where we are now. People are getting out to enjoy it all the time and it\u2019s busy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FoCC consulted with local Wadawurrung people to discover the traditional name for the <em>xanthorrhoea australis<\/em> plant, or grass tree.<\/p>\n<p>This word is <em>baggup<\/em>, and FoCC hopes the community will grow to affectionately know the track as Baggup Trail.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas said the track will make the city a better place to live, and the park an even better place to escape to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new trail will allow locals and visitors to experience the beautiful wilderness and history of this area, and we\u2019re proud to support it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>For Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle, Woowookarung is a \u201ctremendous community asset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis trail adds another dimension to its appeal. It\u2019s a win for the people of Ballarat and the growing number of visitors who have discovered its beauty,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>FoCC\u2019s long-term plans are to complete a 10,000-step network of connected trails around the entire park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next project is to&#8230; integrate the second lookout near the water tanks into another trail, and complete that,\u201d Mr Hartmann said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re also working with the Great Dividing Trail to integrate that into the park.
