{"id":75416,"date":"2021-05-05T11:38:19","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T01:38:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=75416"},"modified":"2021-05-05T11:38:19","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T01:38:19","slug":"a-connection-to-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/living\/a-connection-to-country\/","title":{"rendered":"A connection to country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>First Nations culture to shine at festival.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aboriginal Australians make up the world\u2019s oldest continuous culture, their practices have been passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years.<\/p>\n<p>The Wadawurrung people, the traditional owners of the Ballarat region, have many stories to tell through their crafts.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional skills, such as weaving, will tell some of these Indigenous stories at the Craft Lab + Design Expo.<\/p>\n<p>The Expo will have a spotlight on First Nations creatives, in particular, Indigenous crafts specific to the Ballarat region.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the intricate task of weaving eel traps and join in a rare chance to help craft a ceremonial possum skin cloak for our community.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76136\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76136\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-76136\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/05\/Tammy-Gilson-First-Nations-Artist-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76136\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wadawurrung woman Tammy Gilson practices crafts handed down for hundreds of generations.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the local Indigenous makers who will be at the Expo is award-winning basket weaver Tammy Gilson.<\/p>\n<p>A proud Wadawurrung ba-gurrk (woman), Tammy lives and works on Wadawurrung Country. Her woven objects and cultural adornments have garnered her awards for her passion and craft.<\/p>\n<p>Tammy\u2019s pieces are predominantly made from plant materials sourced from Wadawurrung Country such as flax, sedge and grass tree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy weaving practice is an awakening of missed generational knowledge that translates into my creations,\u201d Tammy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very healing to weave and feels like I was chosen by the ancestors to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tammy explained how her creativity was influenced by the people in her life, including her creative family, as well as her surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am inspired by country I walk, the trees, the birds, the animals and the plants,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Tammy\u2019s hope is for her work to continue her rich heritage and the Indigenous cultural practice that was created by those who created before her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel so blessed to be able to showcase and demonstrate my culture through the pieces I create,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am happy to have an honest yarn and share my knowledge on cultural practices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all know our culture is the oldest living culture in the world and I think to be respectful, Indigenous heritage should be acknowledged and celebrated through the festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt also will give you a sense of belonging knowing your on Wadawurrung country, my ancestor\u2019s country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Check out the Craft Lab and Design Expo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ballarat Mining Exchange, 12-16 Lydiard Street North<\/p>\n<p>Cost &#8211; FREE<\/p>\n<p>15 and 16 May, 10am &#8211; 5pm<\/p>\n<p>22 and 23 May, 10am &#8211; 5pm<\/p>\n<p>Bookings essential at <a href=\"http:\/\/creativeballarat.com.au\/art-of-making\"><strong>creativeballarat.com.au\/art-of-making<\/strong><\/a>.
