{"id":75503,"date":"2021-05-08T04:55:14","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T18:55:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=75503"},"modified":"2021-05-06T11:23:29","modified_gmt":"2021-05-06T01:23:29","slug":"out-of-the-darkness-a-survivors-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/out-of-the-darkness-a-survivors-journey\/","title":{"rendered":"Art sees, hears and believes survivors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>OUT of the Darkness: A Survivor\u2019s Journey<\/em> is the Art Gallery of Ballarat\u2019s new major exhibition, exploring institutional child sexual abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Curated by survivor Robert House, the show features the work of many national artists who are fellow survivors or allies, and some of his own creative pieces.<\/p>\n<p>House has commissioned and showcased the artworks exploring the broad issue of child abuse, both physical and psychological, and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, as a way of unpacking and representing his own personal, haunting, traumatic experiences.<\/p>\n<p>It is one survivor\u2019s response, which does not speak on behalf of others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my orphanage I remember looking out of these little windows. I was very young but even at that age, with the abuse and horrors that were going on, I was determined that I was going to get justice,\u201d House said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75507\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75507\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75507\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/05\/Kelly-Hussey-Smith-The-lost-objects-low-res-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photographer, Kelly Hussey-Smith has produced a series called The lost objects, which has been secured by the AGB for their permanent collection. It\u2019s about taking your suffering, trauma and triggers, and using them to your advantage, to bring about a better world. The child\u2019s voice is now validated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn time, people can look back on this whole collection. Art transcends beyond us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across three spaces, <em>Out<\/em> <em>of the Darkness <\/em>depicts individuals and groups linked to child sexual abuse, heroes, survivors and their stories, alleged perpetrators and those who have been charged or convicted.<\/p>\n<p>John Forrest, Doug Heslop, Kaff-eine, Scott Marsh, James Money, Sassy Park, Michael Peck, Glen Pierce, Rodney Pople, Marcus Wills, Kelly Hussey-Smith, and Glenn Morgan are just some of the featured artists, presenting paintings, sculptures, photography and more.<\/p>\n<p>Care Leavers Australasia Network vice-president Frank Golding is one of House\u2019s heroes and change-makers, also a survivor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wife has done a painting, and for me it\u2019s a story that\u2019s really important. I\u2019m an 80-something-year-old man but my childhood lives in me; it\u2019s not something you can just forget about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe called it <em>Unfinished Business<\/em> and I think that\u2019s exactly right, because the ribbons represent the current protest movement that goes on, but it\u2019s against the background of institutional life with three boys not seeing their parents for 12 years, and living a life of dread, wondering if tonight is their night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis whole exhibition resonates with me, and there\u2019s a diversity of dramatic, emotional expression. The catholic church is prominent, but we mustn\u2019t forget dreadful things happened in the non-denominal institutions too&#8230; The protestants, the Salvation Army.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75506\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75506\" style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75506\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/05\/Kaffeine-Black-f-ing-crows-2019-245x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75506\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The third section of the exhibition includes work by Melbourne street artist Kaff-eine. Image: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr Golding hopes <em>Out of the Darkness <\/em>will contribute to the global movement working to ensure this part of history is never repeated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a worldwide phenomenon. Abuse of children has got to be known, told and voiced, but it\u2019s got to be stopped,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The intensity of the content does escalate as attendees move through the spaces, looking at heroes, the idea of the childhood self, and George Pell.<\/p>\n<p>There will be path directions and warnings to assist viewers in case they are uncomfortable, and do not wish to continue.<\/p>\n<p>AGB curator Julie McLaren said the opening words of the exhibition are to survivors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see you, we hear you, and we believe you.
