TWENTY-five new high-capacity trains will be built by Alstom in Ballarat, creating one hundred and fifty local jobs.<\/p>\n
Acting Premier James Merlino said the trains would be \u201cmore reliable, more accessible, more energy efficient.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn next week\u2019s budget, the Andrews Labor Government will deliver $986 million for… X\u2019Trapolis 2.0 trains,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis will support 750 jobs in manufacturing and the supply chain right across Victoria. These are trains made in Victoria for Victorians by Victorians, and will support the gradual retirement of the Comeng fleet.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to keep Alstom busy and make sure we keep investing in local jobs for regional Victoria.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alstom Australia managing director Mark Coxon said his staff are delighted by the opportunity.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe thank the Acting Premier, the Minister and the Department of Transport for putting their trust and confidence in Alstom to build this next generation of train; X\u2019Trapolis 2.0,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTrains will be built here in Ballarat. We have a long and proud history of building trains here in Ballarat.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not just a production site, it\u2019s an integral part of the local community, with many generations of workers coming through this facility, learning their craft, applying their trade and building trains for Victoria.\u201d<\/p>\n
The X\u2019Trapolis 2.0 fleet will be constructed from next year, and are expected to be on track by 2026.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor our employees in particular, and their families, it gives them some security and certainty for the future, with production going out to the end of 2025,\u201d Mr Coxon said.<\/p>\n
Minister for Public Transport Ben Carroll said the new model that will run on the metropolitan Melbourne commuter network has a capacity of 1200, replacing a former generation that accommodates 760 passengers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis train is going to be so much needed for growing suburbs, especially along the Frankston line, Upfield line or the Craigieburn line,\u201d he said.\u201d<\/p>\n
