LAUREL Sharp joined the Smythesdale Country Women\u2019s Association in the mid-sixties for companionship and has been an important thread in the institution\u2019s fabric ever since.<\/p>\n
When Smythesdale CWA disbanded in 2006, Ms Sharp joined Scarsdale CWA and picked up where she left off.<\/p>\n
In 2021, she is still a key member of the \u201cgrowing and enthusiastic\u201d community group of vibrant rural women from the Shire\u2019s north.<\/p>\n
But having been part of the Association now for 56 years, it\u2019s the opportunities to craft, sew and work with textiles, alongside the social gatherings, that have kept her involved and passionate.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the early days we had craft days once a month. I then went and learnt tapestry through the School of Mines,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI could always knit, crochet and do fancywork, and when I became group president, I got into Hardanger embroidery.<\/p>\n
\u201cRecently, I\u2019ve been working on beading.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Sharp is most proud of a weighted beaded nativity scene she crafted, with people and animals that stand up to visually tell the story of the birth of Christ.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you craft something and you see it finished, I feel that you\u2019ve really achieved something,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Still dabbling in varying mediums, Ms Sharp enjoys variety and never gets bored of the crafts she\u2019s skilled in.<\/p>\n
Recently entering 43 pieces into many different categories of a CWA craft show in Creswick, Ms Sharp showcased her diverse creations and talents on a regional stage.<\/p>\n
