{"id":76891,"date":"2021-07-16T04:56:33","date_gmt":"2021-07-15T18:56:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=76891"},"modified":"2021-07-13T17:06:41","modified_gmt":"2021-07-13T07:06:41","slug":"meredith-pubs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/meredith-pubs\/","title":{"rendered":"Pubs\u2019 turmoil, triumphs and personalities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>PUBS &amp; Publicans of Meredith<\/em> is a new book spotlighting the town\u2019s hotel and inn scene from 1840 to 1960.<\/p>\n<p>Written and researched by Kerrie Kruger, the publication shares stories of the Golden Fleece Inn, Gosling\u2019s Hotel, Watson\u2019s Hotel, The Royal Hotel, The Crown Hotel, The Meredith Hotel, the Huntsman\u2019s Inn, and the Railway Hotel &#8211; now also called The Meredith Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>The book was officially released last weekend at the Meredith Memorial Hall, where hundreds of people sat down to enjoy a launch event hosted by the Meredith History Interest Group.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76893\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76893\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-76893\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/07\/IMG_2316-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76893\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kerrie Kruger\u2019s flyer project grew to become her new 230-page book.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis all started back in 2019 as a small research project about Meredith\u2019s pubs, to produce a flyer for a Meredith Pub Crawl self-guided walk&#8230; but the flyer grew,\u201d Kruger said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuddenly I had a 230-page book. Books are inanimate objects, but the words inside can transport you. This is a glimpse into the past of Meredith by the establishment of its eight hotels and inns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe book starts with the first inn and chronologically follows the pubs\u2019 journeys. The stories are filled with great personalities, tales of turmoil and triumphs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Meredith History Interest Group and other community volunteers dressed up as some of the town\u2019s past pub personalities at the launch, including Ellen and William Watson, and Martha Gosling Nugent, performing short scenes and monologues written as if from their old-world perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>The book has been published within the Group\u2019s Bringing History Alive project, financially supported by the Golden Plains Shire\u2019s Community Strengthening Grants program.<\/p>\n<p>Contact <strong>meredithhistoryinterestgroup@gmail.com<\/strong> for more information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PUBS &amp; Publicans of Meredith is a new book spotlighting the town\u2019s hotel and inn scene from 1840 to 1960.
