{"id":78335,"date":"2021-09-24T09:20:56","date_gmt":"2021-09-23T23:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=78335"},"modified":"2021-09-24T09:20:56","modified_gmt":"2021-09-23T23:20:56","slug":"stars-shine-on-bfnls-big-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/sport\/stars-shine-on-bfnls-big-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Stars shine on BFNL\u2019s big night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Ballarat Football Netball League held its night of nights last Monday, with a virtual presentation of the 2021 Henderson and Sally McLean Medals.<\/p>\n<p>With only an 11 round season due COVID-19, the respective counts were expected to be a tight affairs and delivered the same drama as always, coming down to the final round in both main awards.<\/p>\n<p>Sebastopol\u2019s star on-ball, Lachlan Cassidy brought home local footy\u2019s highest individual honour collecting 16 votes in his ten games to hold off pre-vote count favourites Jack Walker of Melton and 2018 winner Bacchus Marsh\u2019s Dan Burton, to win his very first Henderson Medal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is obviously a very prestigious award and so many great player have come before me and won so I am very proud to say I have,\u201d Cassidy said.<\/p>\n<p>He is just the third Sebastopol player to receive the honour since its inception back in 1954 and Cassidy said it was the work off the track but also the support of his teammates that got him the medal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is all about hard work I suppose, doing the extras and trying to get as fit as I can,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t really have the big muscles oppose to some of the other guys in the league\u2026 obviously it is thanks to my teammates because they are the ones who kicked me the footy and you can\u2019t win stuff like this without great ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since making to the jump across from Ballarat to the Burra, Cassidy has been a consistent performer with his ability to find plenty of the footy one of the many reasons the umpires saw him as this year\u2019s very best and fairest.<\/p>\n<p>North Ballarat Trio Callum McCallum, Jonathan O\u2019Brien and Riely Polkinghorne combined for an impressive 35 votes with their stellar seasons a key factor along with 2021 Mick Malthouse Coach of the Year, Brendan McCartney, in the Roosters being the seasons official 2021 Minor Premiers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78337\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78337\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78337\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/09\/IMG_4454-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rooster Stacey Matthews took her second Sally McLean in four years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the netball the Roosters did have a win though with club captain, Stacey Matthews, taking the Sally McLean Medal polling 17 votes ahead of Akira McCormack of Melton South, Kate Drew of Lake Wendouree and youngster Grace Valele also of the Panthers.<\/p>\n<p>Matthews is no stranger to followers of the BFNL Netball with centre\/ wing attack a key component of the Roosters recent success which has yielded premierships in 2015, 2018 and 2019 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Matthews makes it two out of the past three seasons after winning the McLean Medal back in 2018 with her teammate Madison Selmon taking it home in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Other winners on the night included:<\/p>\n<p>George King Medal &#8211; Jack McLure (East Point) 8 votes<\/p>\n<p>Dick Rees Trophy &#8211; Luke Gray (Ballarat) &amp; Jack Sampi (East Point) 9 votes<\/p>\n<p>B Grade Best &amp; Fairest &#8211; Perri Fenton (East Point) 17 votes<\/p>\n<p>C Grade Best &amp; Fairest &#8211; Kirsty McLean (Ballarat) 13 votes<\/p>\n<p>D Grade Best &amp; Fairest &#8211; Elyse McGensken (Ballarat) 23 votes<\/p>\n<p>E Grade Best &amp; Fairest &#8211; Joanna Aqulina (Melton) 13 votes<\/p>\n<p>19 &amp; Under Best &amp; Fairest &#8211; Annie Bisinella (Lake Wendouree) 16 votes<\/p>\n<p>Mick Malthouse Coach of the Year Award &#8211; Brendan McCarthy (North Ballarat)<\/p>\n<p>Senior Netball Coach of the Year &#8211; Katie Keighrey (Lake Wendouree)<\/p>\n<p>Umpire of the Year &#8211; Adrian Tinetti<\/p>\n<p>2021 Rookie of the Year &#8211; Craig Cooper-Peters (Redan)<\/p>\n<p>Merv and Mary Howard Memorial Shield-Champion Award &#8211; East Point<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Ballarat Football Netball League held its night of nights last Monday, with a virtual presentation of the 2021 Henderson and Sally McLean Medals.
