THE submission deadline for the Ballarat Tech School\u2019s Peter Doherty Science Award has been extended to Wednesday, 10 November.<\/p>\n
The competition invites curious secondary students in years 7 to 10 to engage with experimental ideas while investigating an everyday problem.<\/p>\n
Applying scientific methods to produce research, they will then present their results within a speech and poster.<\/p>\n
STEM educator and program facilitator Kirstyn Hall young people are encouraged to apply their classroom learning to the challenge.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey can choose a topic that they\u2019re interested in. An example I like is the \u2018three-second rule,\u2019 when dropping something on the floor,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHere\u2019s the chance to test something like that. Everyday questions are what this is all about, not highfalutin science. They\u2019ll work to get a result that is useful to people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ballarat Tech School has facilitated the competition since 2018. It was created 12 years ago by the Committee for Ballarat in partnership with Australian Nobel Prize Laureate Professor Peter Doherty.<\/p>\n
Whether participating within their school curriculum or independently, selected students\u2019 projects will be judged by an expert panel, and the best evidence-based scientific presentation will win prizes.<\/p>\n
