Growth, boom gates and post-COVID life<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

IN what was his first major public appearance outside Treasury Gardens since the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, Premier Daniel Andrews visited Ballarat last week.<\/p>\n

During a lengthy press conference Mr Andrews addressed a range of issues, some close to home, others further afield.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what he had to say on\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2026 Ballarat\u2019s growth<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got to make sure you invest each year, every year. It\u2019s no good having a whole bevvy of promises and not doing much about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrowth is a challenge but it\u2019s a great challenge to have. It\u2019s much better than some parts of our country and some parts of the world where people are not happy to be there and moving away.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything is on the radar, everything is looked at because anything and everything that\u2019s important to the people of Ballarat, my team in Ballarat will make sure I know about.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2026 Lydiard Street rail crossing<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a long time but it\u2019s a complex issue. It\u2019s been very difficult.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thank everybody who\u2019s put up with the obvious inconvenience. It started with an accident, but sometimes things are a good deal more complex than they seem.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been done as fast as it can be. I know that does seem a long time\u2026 It is right in the centre of a very, very important city. It isn\u2019t out in some wide-open space. It\u2019s a little bit more challenging than some examples you might cite.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery, very soon we\u2019ll bring this issue to an end, and I\u2019ll be very pleased about that as I\u2019m sure the good people of Ballarat will be.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2026 local heritage<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe heritage values of this city are second to none and they are an amazing asset and they need to be protected.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe history of this city is impressive, it\u2019s critical to our state\u2019s history. But it\u2019s the future we\u2019re focused on.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you can be respectful of the past but also have something that\u2019s safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2026 Western Victoria Transmission Network Project<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have an EES (environment effects statement) process, we have a consultation process that the proponent has gone and engaged in over and above the EES process. Let\u2019s let that run its course.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople can have their views, people can have their views heard. I\u2019m very keen to make sure that EES process is a deep and meaningful engagement with as many people as it possibly can be.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand and acknowledge there are different views and they are strongly held.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2026 the State electoral redistribution<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t take any seats for granted, wherever the lines are drawn. But of course, we know and understand that the people of Ballarat, this community, [has] been very good to us. And we, I\u2019d like to think, have worked as hard as we possibly can.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll be working very hard regardless of what the notional margins are or where the boundaries are drawn.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a proud city. It\u2019s got a great history but I think it\u2019s got an even better future if we keep on delivering.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2026 winning Ripon<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be campaigning across the state, and we\u2019ll be offering every single Victorian, regardless of whether their local member is from our side or the other side, whether they\u2019re in a marginal or so-called safe seat,\u2026 a positive and optimistic agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2026 on Ballarat\u2019s post-COVID role<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cOur state only succeeds when big regional centres like Ballarat succeeds.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Ballarat is travelling well, if Ballarat\u2019s growing\u2026 has that sense of confidence and a real spark in terms of investment and jobs, that\u2019s when we know Victoria\u2019s doing well.<\/p>\n

\u201cBallarat won\u2019t just be a part of COVID recovery, Ballarat will be critical to that recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

The extension of Ballarat Airport\u2019s main runway is dependent on state government money to move a key road.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2026 a new high school for the city<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll see us have a lot more to say about a really optimistic and positive agenda for our kids and our young people, and it\u2019s not just about school. It\u2019s about jobs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will give you my absolute commitment, I\u2019ll be back many, many times between now and the end of next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2026 CBD revitalisation<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cRetail, face-to-face retail, has been under threat from online for a very long time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe CBD of regional cities and the CBD of Melbourne is going to look different in the years to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not here to tell traders in Ballarat how it ought to be, but I am here to listen. So it\u2019s got to come from Ballarat to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u2026 the region\u2019s recent storms<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to thank SES and other members of our emergency services family who work so hard to respond to many, many call outs.<\/p>\n
