{"id":79210,"date":"2021-11-21T04:57:04","date_gmt":"2021-11-20T17:57:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=79210"},"modified":"2021-11-16T16:24:28","modified_gmt":"2021-11-16T05:24:28","slug":"marie-mason-backspace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/marie-mason-backspace\/","title":{"rendered":"Carving landscapes in lino"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SMYTHES Creek printmaker Marie Mason is the latest visual artist to present work within the Art Gallery of Ballarat\u2019s Backspace.<\/p>\n<p>A master of colourful reduction lino prints rich in contrast, tone and pattern, Mason depicts diverse regional Victorian landscapes, from Mildura, to farm land outside Ballarat, to Venus Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Aptly named <em>From the Murray to the sea<\/em>, many of exhibition\u2019s pieces were produced at Malvern\u2019s Firestation Print Studio, and in Fitzroy\u2019s Australian Print Workshop.<\/p>\n<p>They show the state\u2019s unique, different, changing landscapes, some after floods, droughts, fires, storms, dust and wind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am trying to separate and simplify the patterns of nature and print them accurately together to show the beauty and diversity of creation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79212\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79212\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-79212\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/11\/the-suns-last-glare-reflected-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Linocut, The sun\u2019s last glare reflected is one of the new show\u2019s featured works. Image: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe presence of sunlight and shade in the landscape, twilight shadows and water, are all fascinating challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love making beautiful, interesting pictures and am addicted to printmaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A former art teacher, Mason was inspired by the lino prints of Margaret Preston, and consequently \u201cfell in love\u201d with the medium.<\/p>\n<p>She currently develops her prints throughout the working week in her rural home studio, experimenting with collages, transferring sketches onto lino plates, carving, inking, and rolling plates through her printing press.<\/p>\n<p>Art Gallery of Ballarat director Louise Tegart said the prevalence of changing natural landscapes in Mason\u2019s show emphasises the \u201cimportance of environmental issues to a sustainable and vibrant community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Backspace champions the contemporary works of emerging local artists. <em>From the Murray to the sea<\/em> is on show in the Gallery until January 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SMYTHES Creek printmaker Marie Mason is the latest visual artist to present work within the Art Gallery of Ballarat\u2019s Backspace.
