{"id":80017,"date":"2022-01-15T04:57:46","date_gmt":"2022-01-14T17:57:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=80017"},"modified":"2022-01-11T16:21:46","modified_gmt":"2022-01-11T05:21:46","slug":"buninyong-blueberry-farm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/buninyong-blueberry-farm\/","title":{"rendered":"Berry fruitful farm celebrates 40 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A SUMMER favourite for family members young and old, the Buninyong Blueberry Farm is turning forty in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Owners Ernie and Margaret Neale have run the small business for the last 12 years, having purchased it from Helen and Bruce Muir, who originally established a chestnut and walnut plantation on the property beside the Midland Highway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruce was working with the Victorian Department of Agriculture and was aware of the first cuttings of blueberries were arriving in Australia,\u201d Mr Neale said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had access to some of those earliest cuttings, planted them at Buninyong to see how they\u2019d go, and they went well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey need free-draining soil that\u2019s slightly acidic, and that\u2019s the volcanic soil that we have in Buninyong.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80020\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80020\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80020\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/01\/IMG_1213-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80020\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Six varieties of blueberries are grown on the Midland Highway property.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Originally, blueberries were planted between rows of chestnuts and walnuts, but when the berries thrived, they became the farm\u2019s focus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the first punnets sent to fruit and vegetable markets in Melbourne were grown here. They were some of the first growers in Australia,\u201d Mr Neale said.<\/p>\n<p>With a background in agricultural science, purchasing the property was \u201cperfect\u201d for him as he approached early retirement from teaching at Mount Clear College.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Neale also grew up on similar volcanic country near Colac, and knew he wanted a new challenge \u201cin the farming game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than a decade on, the property grows six in-demand varieties of blueberries that ripen over six weeks in summer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80021\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80021\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80021\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/01\/IMG_5917-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With an agricultural science background, Ernie Neale took up blueberry farming when he retired from teaching at Mount Clear College.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They have a team of young people that ready-pick the berries, and slightly later in the season, the public is invited to pick their own.<\/p>\n<p>Ripening this year has been delayed due to the mild summer, and heavy rains.<\/p>\n<p>The farm is a true family business, with Mrs Neale a key part of the harvest process, and their daughter Kathleen and son Christopher offering social media and tech support.<\/p>\n<p>Producing food that can easily perish if not picked or eaten at the right time, they value they opportunity to directly connect with their community via social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love being a part of Buninyong. Most of the people born in the area know the farm&#8217;s a part of the place,\u201d Mr Neale said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany who came along as children are bringing their kids, and some are almost bringing their grandkids.
