{"id":80419,"date":"2022-02-03T04:47:11","date_gmt":"2022-02-02T17:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=80419"},"modified":"2022-02-01T18:14:03","modified_gmt":"2022-02-01T07:14:03","slug":"golden-city-classic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/sport\/golden-city-classic\/","title":{"rendered":"Disc sports a golden addition to city"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE disc sports community in Ballarat is growing stronger, following the successful Golden City Classic ultimate frisbee and disc golf tournaments last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Ballarat Disc Sports president Leah Cushion said 72 people played disc golf at the \u201cfriendly\u201d Victoria Park event on Sunday, across varying divisions.<\/p>\n<p>Professionals and amateurs on-course included residents from the Ballarat region, and those who had travelled from Melbourne, Geelong, South Australia, and the ACT.<\/p>\n<p>The Golden City Classic was so popular, more players registered than the amount of people Ballarat Disc Sports could safely accommodate on the day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82172\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82172\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82172\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/Disc-Golf-20220129-MC011-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82172\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Narada Guzman&#8217;s disc rips through the air.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt was good to see so many people out making use of the course on such a great day, and it\u2019s been a good chance for the higher-ups to get some practice in before nationals later this year, one of which is here in April on Anzac Day weekend,\u201d Ms Cushion said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also really good for newer players to experience their first disc golf tournament. It\u2019s an openly accessible sport for all ages and abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ballarat\u2019s Reece Surkitt played with a group of new and old friends in the MA4 novice division, enjoying the chance to be active in the sunshine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDisc golf is a really easy, accessible way of getting outside and spending time with friends and people you might not have actually met otherwise,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82174\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82174\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82174\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/Disc-Golf-20220129-MC016-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82174\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Holly Curtis putts on hole 17.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cUnlike other sports where if you\u2019re bad at them, you\u2019re really bad at them, anyone can throw something and that makes it really accessible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be nice to see another course pop up on the other side of Ballarat. I think it would be good for tourism, and a way to get people to come to Ballarat and stay overnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Cushion said last weekend was a huge two days for the Ballarat Disc Sports group, with 144 players from across Victoria playing ultimate frisbee at Trekardo Park on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really good day, with Geelong taking out the championship. It was great to see quite a few people stay over in Ballarat over the weekend to play two codes of such a fantastic sport,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really excited to see it grow and develop.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82173\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82173\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82173\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/Disc-Golf-20220129-MC009-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glen Maisey lets his blue disc fly.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Those interested to try disc golf at Victoria Park can purchase a starter kit at Guf or SportsPower, or hire one from the library.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRock up with just yourself, or as many people as you like in a group, and just go,\u201d Ms Cushion said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe maps on the course are really self-explanatory, and anyone keen to come and to give it a go certainly can at their own leisure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ballarat Disc Sports have social evenings throughout the week.
