{"id":80676,"date":"2022-02-27T04:55:35","date_gmt":"2022-02-26T17:55:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/?p=80676"},"modified":"2022-02-22T10:32:49","modified_gmt":"2022-02-21T23:32:49","slug":"a-roll-of-the-dice-in-black-hill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/news\/a-roll-of-the-dice-in-black-hill\/","title":{"rendered":"A roll of the dice in Black Hill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SIX large tables adorn Bloc Theatre Company\u2019s main rehearsal space on Saturday evenings, dotted with miniature models that lay waste across cardboard battlefields.<\/p>\n<p>The Black Hill facility is hosting a different kind of performance, one in which the clattering of dice determines the outcome of simulated warfare.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an the average meeting for Ballarat Fellowship Gaming, a collective of many of the city\u2019s wargaming enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>Founded last year, the non-profit group is preparing to host its first major event, a campaign based around the Warhammer 40k franchise.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign will begin on Saturday, 5 March and span three months.<\/p>\n<p>Club secretary Campbell Rowe said the event is being spearheaded to rekindle interest in the group following interruptions due to COVID lockdowns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to give people a reason to come out again and play some games as opposed to the scattered community we normally have,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Players will begin with a limited set of models with which to act out their battles, and their collections will expand in size as the campaign continues.<\/p>\n<p>With the Warhammer rulebook as a guide, players will be able to create their own narrative, shaping their characters and battalions within an established fictional universe.<\/p>\n<p>Group president Adam Mitchell said the ambitious length of the campaign will allow players to feel an organic sense of progression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople will be asked to bring their own backstory, and over time there\u2019ll be battles, people might play certain opponents or develop grudges,\u201d Mr Mitchell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019ll be really cool moments in the game that you can plug into your narrative and that\u2019ll progress as the campaign goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80678\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80678\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/goldenplains\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/02\/273959843_1905007326350724_1886397073023990413_n-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Legion where a Dewback-riding Storm Trooper surveys the field, scouting ahead for the Empire. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr Rowe said their choice of campaign is driven by the community, and that despite frequent trends in interest, Warhammer 40k is \u201cprobably the most popular wargame around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BFG aims to provide a space where board gamers of any experience can meet to play their favourite wargame, with talks of expanding to include role-playing and other tabletop styles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt lets us cater for a broad range of tastes,\u201d Mr Mitchell said. \u201cYou\u2019ve got fantasy settings, future settings, big games, small games, and everything in between.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond wargaming, the group seeks to foster a creative hub where people can work on their painted models and trial their own independently developed games.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Rowe said he hopes the increasing interest in the upcoming campaign will foster a sense of camaraderie and friendship within the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019d like to see people playing games against people that they wouldn\u2019t normally play with,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about creating that community and getting people to make new friends, and just to get out there and have some fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group meets every Saturday at 608 Peel Street North, Black Hill and plays from 6.30pm until 11pm.<\/p>\n<p>Prizes will be awarded at the end of the upcoming Warhammer campaign for categories of painting, war-themes and sportsmanship.<\/p>\n<p>Participation for each weekend is $10, and those wishing to spectate must offer a gold coin.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SIX large tables adorn Bloc Theatre Company\u2019s main rehearsal space on Saturday evenings, dotted with miniature models that lay waste across cardboard battlefields.
