CELEBRATIONS were in order at Ballarat Town Hall\u2019s Trench Room on Friday as Soroptimist International\u2019s local chapter gathered to commemorate the organisation\u2019s centennial anniversary.<\/p>\n
The reception included speeches by club president Dr Linda Danvers and a visit from regional head Dr Karen Felstead, with original members Betty Pierce and Pamella Taylor speaking also.<\/p>\n
At 43 years, the local chapter itself is just under half the age of its founding equivalent, and Ms Danvers said the group was nonetheless happy to join in the celebration.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday is a real milestone, and it\u2019s an absolutely lovely occasion,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re honoured that the council were willing to support us in celebrating these 100 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Formed in California in 1921, the organisation aims to improve the lives of women worldwide, and in the course of its global expansion, the Ballarat chapter was formed in 1979.<\/p>\n
City of Ballarat mayor Cr Daniel Moloney said the event provided an opportunity to reflect on the personal achievements of those involved in the group and their contributions to the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s because of the wonderful people who care about the community, who care about the advancement of others that we are such a great city,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur community is just so much stronger for the Soroptimists, and our city is a much better place with the values and principles promoted by this wonderful organisation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Ballarat chapter of Soroptimist International holds various fundraisers and community events and provides scholarships at schools in the region.<\/p>\n
It is hoped the branch will continue to expand its numbers, and the chapter will soon host their annual International Women\u2019s Day event on Tuesday, 8 March.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
