TEAMS are needed for Ballarat RSL\u2019s \u201cBull\u201d Allen Memorial Open Fours bowls competition, to take place at Midlands Golf Club next Sunday.<\/p>\n
After a successful inaugural event last year, veteran advocate for Ballarat RSL Phil Carter said the club is hoping to outdo its initial offering.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re working our heart out to get it out there, and wanting all the rinks filled. We\u2019re looking for about 30 teams and we\u2019ve got 15 so far,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019ll be $50 entry for each team, with afternoon tea included, and a presentation afterwards with a bit of socialising as bowlers often do.\u201d<\/p>\n
The event is held in honour of Ballarat-born World War Two hero, Lesley \u2018Bull\u2019 Allen, who received the Silver Star for rescuing 12 American allies during conflict with Japanese soldiers.<\/p>\n
The Ballarat RSL has been advocating for Mr Allen to receive the Victorian Cross, which Mr Carter said is the \u201cwhole idea\u201d behind the competition.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was such a Ballarat hero, and everybody from that era knows about Bull,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, until he gets the Cross, this is a great precursor to Anzac Day and a celebration for an amazing war hero from Ballarat.\u201d<\/p>\n
The winning team will see each player receive their own \u201cBull\u201d Allen trophy and a cash prize of $50.<\/p>\n
The \u201cBull\u201d Allen Open Fours competition will take place from 1pm on Sunday, 10 April at 330 Heinz Lane, Invermay Park.<\/p>\n
