THE Meredith History Interest Group are inviting the public into their heritage bluestone building for their open day on Sunday, 15 May.<\/p>\n
People can walk the halls and learn about the history of Meredith and surrounds, and the group\u2019s president Margaret Cooper said it will provide a great way to reintroduce themselves to the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople who don\u2019t normally come in will feel welcome to do just that. There\u2019s a lot of rich history to Meredith and so this is a special day to showcase that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe haven\u2019t held one of these since before COVID so it helps to let more people know we\u2019re here and to highlight what we do.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd we haven\u2019t set a line around what we cover. Even things down in Shelford, Elaine and Lethbridge, Steiglitz and the surrounds we include, so it\u2019s relevant to the broader community.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ledger books and historical minutes will be on display in cases made especially for the event, and the group\u2019s self-produced historical books and films will be available for purchase.<\/p>\n
The group traditionally operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and with 70 members and a committee of nine people, Mrs Cooper said they have provided a helpful service for the community since 2008.<\/p>\n
\u201cNew people in town have come in previously wanting to know who lived in their house and where the town\u2019s name came from,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019ll be good for them to meet some of us and get to know a bit about the town. We don\u2019t put the scones, jam and cream out on any regular day.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Meredith History Interest Group\u2019s open day will take place from 10am to 3pm at 31 Staughton Street.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
