THE Australian Bureau of Statistics\u2019 latest census has revealed the numbers for the Shire\u2019s growing population.<\/p>\n
Nearly 3300 new residents have been welcomed into Golden Plains Shire over the last five years, boosting the region\u2019s population to nearly 25,000.<\/p>\n
With more than 21,600 residents counted in the 2016 census, mayor Cr Gavin Gamble said the data showcases the ongoing popularity of the municipality.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf our 16 townships, 15 have seen an increase in their population since 2021, with new residents in all areas of the Shire,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s clear from the census data that many more people are recognising Golden Plains Shire as an ideal location to live, where they enjoy a high-quality rural lifestyle, while remaining close to the services, employment opportunities and other benefits of our neighbouring regional cities of Geelong and Ballarat.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bannockburn maintained the lead as the largest town in the Shire with more than 1100 new residents bringing the population to nearly 6500.<\/p>\n
Smythes Creek and Teesdale followed with an extra 609 and 587 residents respectively.<\/p>\n
Since the 2016 census, more than 1000 homes have been built in the area, totalling more than 8300 residences.<\/p>\n
Cr Gamble said the results of the census highlight a municipality focused on expansion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis level of population growth is a testament to the work of council in recognising and developing sustainable growth areas within Golden Plains that will ensure our Shire continues to grow responsibly, while maintaining our enviable rural lifestyle for our existing and new community members,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil is committed to supporting the sustainable and responsible growth of Golden Plains Shire, with work currently underway on the development the Golden Plains Settlement Strategy, which will inform the sustainable growth of our Shire over the next 15 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Of the 16 locations mentioned, only Rokewood saw a slight decline in population, down nine people from 217 in 2016.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
