CHILDREN from Bannockburn\u2019s St Mary MacKillop Catholic Primary School are on a trip to Melbourne today to take part an annual school story-dance program, Wakakirri.<\/p>\n
The school first participated in the national event in 2020, and performing arts teacher Michelle Chambers said this year\u2019s entry will differ from their debut.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course, we thought we were going to Melbourne and we thought we were going on stage but instead we had to do a video submission,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow we finally get to go, so we\u2019re packing our buses on Thursday, heading to the Clocktower Centre in Moonee Ponds and we get to perform on stage with all these other schools from Victoria.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s nothing better for them than performing in front of a live audience. There\u2019s a real technique to this stage work and seeing other kids performing as well will be really good for them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Established in 1992, Wakakirri performances are based around ideas of social issues and themes.<\/p>\n
The school\u2019s rehearsals started in term two, with 63 student actors and dancers telling the real-life story of a dinosaur fossil mistaken for an opal found at Lightning Ridge in outback New South Wales.<\/p>\n
A pre-show took place last week to showcase the performance to parents and teachers, and dancer Tara McClellad said she\u2019s now looking forward to performing for a larger audience.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have our families there to watch this time which we didn\u2019t have before. Last time it was just in front of the teachers and some cars driving by,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re really getting out there for this one and I know it\u2019s going to be boosting the courage and provide some learning for some of us here because it\u2019s not the sort of thing they\u2019d normally do.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
